I recently became aware of a whole bunch of obscure punctuation marks that I never knew existed.  As a result of this discovery, I’ve created a series of images that honor these obscure punctuation marks. This is another in the series.  Not sure anyone will ever actually use these punctuation marks but you could try to adding them in as part of your social media dating app profile.  Who knows, you might get lucky. 

The "Irony Mark" is a punctuation mark designed to indicate a hidden subtext or ironic meaning in a sentence. It's meant to help readers understand that the text may be sarcastic, cynical, or expressing a subtext that is different from what the words explicitly say. The mark typically precedes the sentence to which it applies. 

You can certainly try using it nowadays but the irony would be..... very few would understand what you’re talking about. But…. you would.  And really, that’s all that matters.

Also called the Percontation Point and the Irony Mark, this one’s used to indicate that there’s another layer of meaning in a sentence. Usually a sarcastic or ironic one. So it is essentially a tool for smart people to use to make stupid people feel even stupider. Which makes it the best punctuation mark of all.

An Important Announcement (no not really)

This is a backwards question mark. ⸮ It's different from the inverted question mark used in Spanish. It is a form of punctuation that can be used to denote irony or sarcasm. (see here )

I have no idea how you can type that (maybe it's possible with some alt code? again, no idea) so for now I'm just copy/pasting it.

BUT YEAH I want to use that in the future because wow useful. So if I start sticking backwards question marks on things, that's why.

this is an arabic question mark, which is also a mirrored question mark and one of the proposed 'irony marks' someone tried to have instated hundreds of years ago. since SOME of my followers/stalkers can't tell when i'm being sincere or not, I will instate the bastard's use until I no longer find it endearing.

The Interrobang and the Irony

Today I have learned of two fascinating yet highly underutilized pieces of punctuation. The first is for simultaneous alarm and confusion. Not only does it look awesome (‽) but it has the incredible and vaguely dirty distinction of being named “The Interrobang”. The second is the “Irony Mark” (؟) used to denote irony and sarcasm. How are these both not rampant on the internet‽ How is every WTF not coupled with an interrobang‽ And sarcasm‽ People never use sarcasm on the internet؟ And it is never, ever misunderstood؟ Both of these things seem much more useful than an oxford comma (or the lack there of) which folks seem so passionate about.
