I feel like I’ve been kind of absent from Tumblr for the last few days? So, yesterday was Thursday, which is my day with my grandparents. Gram was... interesting. Sometimes she gets in this mood where she can’t sit still and she can’t focus and she’s just all over the place, she’s just so scattered, and it just makes for a really exhausting day. She thought we were on vacation. She thought it was FREEZING outside... it was 61 degrees and SUNNY yesterday, I was dying to go outside, and we were outside for like two minutes before we had to go in, and I was just looking longingly out all of the windows after that.
So anyway, yesterday was a full day, and I was exhausted when we got home.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday, I spent the day next door with my neighbors—the ones with the baby. They got home from the hospital Monday evening, and I told them I was going to be around all of Tuesday, if they felt like some company. We left it totally flexible, so they didn’t feel obligated to have me over. I did end up heading over around 3 though, after getting some laundry and stuff done. We hung out for a while, they told me about everything that happened at the hospital (it wasn’t fun, but they did their best, and they got through it), and then we were talking about all kinds of random stuff and joking around, and things, in general, got a lot lighter, which was good.
I don’t quite remember how, but bacon came up in conversation. And I was like, “bacon is good, but bacon dipped in maple syrup is AMAZING.” And then they were like, “d’you know what’s even better than that? Bacon IN PANCAKES dipped in maple syrup.” and I was just like, “...oh. Yeah. That does sound pretty amazing.” So then they were like, “what are you doing for dinner?” and I was like “...nothing? Eating food probably?” and they were like “do you want to stay and we can make bacon pancakes for dinner?” and I was like, “uh, YES!”
So I went over at 3, and did’t get home till ten that night. We had a lot of fun, and they thanked me for helping take their minds off everything. It was a good day.
And now, the anecdote you’ve all (or at least liltingletters) been waiting for: the story of my best coming out to date.
Towards the beginning of the visit, there was something going on outside, and my neighbor (the baby’s dad) was curious, and kind of wanted to get a closer look, but didn’t want to be weird and just go outside to see. So I was like “why don’t you go get your mail?” and he said he’d already gotten it, so I shrugged and said, “you could get my mail.” and he was like, “you don’t have a male,” with that waiting for you to get my lame joke face on—that happens a lot with him. Of course, when it’s said aloud, you think he’s still talking about mail, so I was like, “what”? not quite following, and he was like “a male, you don’t have a male.” and I was like, “you’re right, I don’t.”
At this point, it’s important to mention that he makes a lot of pun jokes like this, and he knows how ridiculous they are. So he’s kind of acknowledging how bad the joke was, and talking half to himself, and saying, “I don’t even know if you like males.” and without missing a beat, and in a very casual way, I just say, “I don’t.” He wasn’t expecting that at all. He was like, “wait, are you serious?” and I was like, “yeah, I like girls.” and then he felt REALLY bad because he felt like he had put me on the spot. He REALLY hadn’t. I could have easily sidestepped it, but I’d been thinking that I’d like to come out to them, and opportunities like that so rarely present themselves.
So he’s apologizing, and I said, “it’s okay, really, as long as you’re okay with it, it’s all good. I mean, you’re not kicking me out, right?” and he was like, “you’re still sitting there, aren’t you?”
So the reason that this was my best coming out to date is how completely comfortable I was. We were in their living room, I think he was actually holding the baby at the time, his wife was sitting next to him, and we were just having a really laid back conversation and enjoying each other’s company. It fit in the flow of the conversation. And I didn’t feel any stress or anxiety when I came out. My heart didn’t race, and I didn’t feel any fear. It was just a really comfortable situation, and it felt like a complete non-issue.
I think in a different situation, they might have taken it a little differently, but we’ve had quite a week. And the dynamic, where he felt like he’d put his foot in his mouth, worked in my favor. It all just... worked. And it was in the beginning of the visit, and I was there, like, another five hours after that, and there wasn’t any weirdness. There were awesome pancakes though, and random Doctor Who conversations. It was a good day.
