Funky, acidic Basque cider is catching on in the United States. Here are 3 great bottles and where to drink them.

"Isastegi has an effervescence that's immediately apparent in the pour. There is a strong oyster-like minerality that comes through on the palate, making it an ideal pairing for shellfish. Compared to the other Basque ciders, the Isastegi contains higher acids and more pronounced tannins."

Isastegi Sagardo Naturala Natural Cider

Bottle: 750mL, corked

Glass: Skinny pint

Cost: $9.99

Pours: Still and golden

Smell: A decent bit of crisp funk

Taste: It's slippery in the mouth (apparently it's meant to be shot, not savored), with a range of funk on its tail. The funk makes it tingle despite the lack of carbonation, but you're also glad when it's gone.

Overall: An interesting take on cider, with zero sugar and a lot of funk, but the flavors aren't exactly amazing. Worth trying if you've never had a Spanish cider, but they're not my favorite style.

Sidreria Isastegi Sidra Natural

Appearance: Bright golden yellow, slightly cloudy. 

Aroma: Strong musky earthy aroma with alcoholic and grape notes. 

Taste: Sour, tart with earthy has subtle apple and grape undertones with a mild woodsy finish. 

Mouthfeel: Dense flavors, not too acidic or carbonated. 

Ingredients: Contains sulfates 

Overall: I was very excited to try my first Spanish cider from the scenic area of the Ernio and Aralar mountains in Basque country in Northern Spain. I bought this cider at Astor Wines in NYC. For the density of flavors, this cider was surprisingly drinkable. I enjoyed this unique cider especially the sour flavors woodsyness on the finish. Isastegi was very different from the mostly American ciders that I drink and more tame then other organic or "Natural" ciders.
