this “lol Hamasniks have dyed/‘weird’ hair” thing is a talking point/stereotype I keep seeing from Israelis, and I would respectfully ask that y’all move on from it.

I have no idea if this is also the case in Israel (tho judging from photos/video of Tel Aviv Pride I’ve seen, it’s way less common there than here, so I’m giving the benefit of the doubt) and I can’t speak for other countries, but here in America, colorful or atypical hair is an incredibly common form of queer “flagging”—essentially, non-verbally signaling to other queer people that we are also queer. the “weird” (i.e., non-conforming) hairstyles may also be as a part of a person’s gender expression.

someone with these styles may not necessarily be queer, they may just be alt. but alternative subcultures are often drawing from queer styles as a way of bucking gender norms, and many alternative sub cultures are deeply tied to the queer community as a result.

the prevalence of colorful & non-conforming hairstyles at these protests is due to the prevalence of queer people & alternative subcultures in leftwing spaces, because those are the spaces that are not actively hostile towards us for being queer. so when you rag on Hamasniks for having undercuts & colorful hair & piercings, you’re picking on them for looking visibly queer.

there are a thousand and one things to laugh at Hamasniks about that you could focus on instead. choosing to take potshots at queer & alt hairstyles just makes you sound like an asshole. so please just leave that one on the cutting room floor

With military action against the Iranian regime starting 3 days before Purim I can only think of the three days of fasting the Jews did in ancient Persia before Esther met with the king and delivered us from a terrible fate. I will be fasting during daylight until Purim and praying that by the time we are done reading the megillah we will hear news that the people of Iran will have taken back control of their country and delivered themselves from the oppression they have faced for decades.
