The way that Flint stealing the cache literally breaks them.
-broken promise (the one thing that silver had truly asked of flint in the entire show) "do i have it?"
-undermines Silver in front of the enemy, making him look weak
-provides an opportunity for Rogers to wreck the walrus and kill the crew
-risks madi's life with no alternative plan in place
-reinforces a pattern that flint has had the whole show of risking other people's assets and losing them, and of needing to do things his way or no way
-making silver question whether or not he's been used by flint this whole time
-flint gaslighting him that they can get over it regardless of Silver's feelings about it and saying that he did it with his best interests in mind ("I'll get you through this" )
-this is what it will be. There will be no point in which flint will ever be held to his word. No promise too great, no person he holds dear enough to keep it. Flint will forever be a wild card in their war, willing to risk or sacrifice anything to get things done as he sees fit.
-the idea that Flint simply can't help himself (can't let go of the control he needs to have over events)
-that Flint thinks that a betrayal like this is so easily overlooked
-using Silver's grief as a way to disregard his agency
Nobody talks about this particular betrayal enough, because it is monumental in understanding why silver did what he did. It's a confirmation of all of the worst doubts Silver has had about Flint, that both Billy and Hands have been hounding him about. A projection onto the uncertain future, one in which Flint cannot be counted on to keep his word.
And at the same time, he sees it as an act of love! Flint thinks the trust between them is strong enough to weather betrayal, because to him it would be! He loves Silver that much!
