I spent too long writing this
Hey, random idea So I was thinking about how like, Peter is 16, and even though he's super smart and can totally hold a conversation with Tony and the other avengers, he is still just 16. He still isn't mature in the way the others on his team are. He probably won't relate to middle aged people too well.
So I was thinking that Peter could be out on a mission one summer with all the avengers that lasts weeks and he's super excited at first, but after a while he misses home. It starts just as homesickness and missing his friends. By the third week without contact with a non-adult, and the misunderstandings that are bound to happen, he just stops talking. He shrinks into the background.
It's gradual, not spouting jokes because Natasha glares at him every time. Not adding on as much during strategy meetings because he knew he wouldn't be able to say something as eloquently as Steve, letting Tony tell Bruce about the spider suit because he was more knowlegable about everything to do with it. So by the end of the mission, he's either fighting in battles, or in his room working and staying out of the way. One night as he lay in bed thinking about his exhausting day, when he realized he hadn't spoken more than two words at a time. The. Entire. Day.
It wasn't on purpose. God no, the avengers liked the kid a lot. They never meant to push he out of conversations, it just happened. And the mission they were on was high stress, and they could deal with it. But a chatty kid from queens? They all were brought up in lonely situation, but Peter was surrounded by people from when he was able to walk. In his tiny apartment he grew up with an affectionate family. He had close friends, and enen knew the owner of the deli he went to daily. He couldn't deal with it the way that could.
After a while of shrinking away, Peter gets hurt, he was dropped from a 30 story building and he almost died. Thing is when he ends up on the ground he doesn't get up like usual. He just goes hysterical, crying curled up in a ball. He just couldn't take it. He was so fucking lonely and stressed and his mind was just unwell.
As the fighting ended, Tony came down from where he was fighting to find Peter, the constant ray of fucking sunlight in his eyes, sobbing and shaking. It rattled him and he comes out of his suit and make him lie still because he think he might have been physically hurt. But Peter just clings to him because he's the closest living thing around.
The avengers surround them and feel hella uncomfortable because this teenage boy is crying and he has snot dripping out of his face and Tony is just too goddamn stiff. They go back to the nearest SHIELD base where Peter is still shaking and staying by Tony's side because he just needs to be close. He just feels hollow at that point, like a sad chocolate rabbit at Easter. And his hollow chest was just caving in.
Peter has a phycological exam which finds him in extreme mental distress due to isolation. The weight of the mission, the amount of fighting that he'd done, the physical pain he went through, and the lack of connection to others just hurt him mentally.
Peter is sent back to New York and he's both sad and relieved to be let back into a better environment, where he knows people are going to be around to talk to. At first he's still dealing with his mental state, being more sensitive, and quiet around others. Aunt May notices, and after a long conversation they decide that Peter needs to see a therapist. Well, Aunt May resides that for him. He was a bit distraught by the idea of seeing a "shrink". Although he didn't have an anxiety disorder, he still needed a doctor. May told him that like a broken bone or an infected cut, if you left a mental wound untreated, the concicuences could last far longer than the treatment.
The therapist( assigned by sheild) guided Peter through his anxiety, and after a month or so, he was making progress and in 3 months he found that his anxiety was near gone. Tony watched as the teen grew more excitable and happy, like the old days, but Peter seemed to be softer now. Like he had put a dampaner on his personality when he was in the lab or around the avengers.
Tony knew about Peter's treatment and supported it whole heartedly ( if he let himself get help when he was Peter's age, his life would have been a hell of a lot less stressful to say the least) As he spent more time with the kid, watching him work on the streets, and in his lab, he became more
