So the thing that I think sticks out most to me about obsession (other than the phenomenal acting, sound design, filming and editing of course) is the fact that within the story you can see how it all could’ve been okay. Not the wish, the wish never could’ve been okay, but without the wish. Without Bear’s obsession. The movie makes it so you can see it so clearly. They give you this image in so many ways—they give him these opportunities before and after the wish to choose the right thing, choose the hard thing. But he never does. For example he chose to buy her the one wish willow instead of the citrine necklace. In the movie they’re vague about it but do you know what citrine is good for? Inspiring creativity, giving clarity and motivation. That is exactly what Nikki wants, what she says she wants in the car ride over to her house. It’s what Bear would get her if he actually knew or cared for her instead of the idea of her, if he put more effort in than just the thought. But no, he buys the wish because I don’t think he ever really intended to give it to her because have you ever seen something in a store and really wanted it but you’re there to buy something for a friend so you get it for them and just a small part of you wishes that it won’t end up with them? That it will stay with you instead? You justify it by thinking “well I’m the one who bought it anyway, it’s mine.” Because really it wasn’t for them, it was for you. His gift—his love, it wasn’t for her, it was for him.
honestly i don't think sqq (jiu) would have minded the accusations of preferential treatment from yqy if they'd felt true. like as children he guarded the title of being yue qi's Favorite with teeth and claws. why shouldn't he be given preferential treatment? everyone ought to know just who qi-ge likes and trusts over everyone else. and for good fucking reason--who else here is watching out for qi-ge? as peak lords he's literally 2nd in command and chief tactician, if yqy values his word over yours, then its both what makes most sense and also what he deserves.
the thing is that to sqq, being accused of being favoured by yqy over others now just feels like a sick joke, because obviously (to him) that's not the fucking case. if he actually gave him preferential treatment you'd think he'd listen to what he has to fucking say, instead of believing what anyone else tells him about sqq. you'd think, if he was yqy's favorite, he wouldn't have left him to rot.
so i think, in a setting where they reconcile after becoming peak lords, that sqq would very much slap yqy's love for him in everyones faces as a kind of power move. a kind of, "oh, you thought that was favouritism? you havent seen yet what it looks like when qi-ge lets himself favour someone."
heated rivalry really coming out and saying what i've always thought which is that finding people funny is one of the most sincere ways of loving them because it's loving the uniqueness of how they experience and interpret the world
agree or disagree, I just need people to understand why Anders did what he did. especially now that I’ve played through the game, begging the chantry to do anything but sit with their thumbs up their ass when they could be stepping in to do literally anything. he couldn’t have targeted the gallows without directly targeting the mages as well, and while his actions are short sighted with his drive for vengeance above justice, it was still done with a desperation to stop the injustice mages face. and the templars are so associated with the chantry, despite how that order of authority had sort of swapped in Kirkwall.
“Anders thought he was wrong, he can’t be right,” “Anders fought injustice, he can’t be wrong,” Anders was inevitable idk what to tell you. mages were actively being oppressed and killed, the boot was coming down anyways, Meridith had already been calling for the Right of Anullment before the chantry was even a target. though Anders was the inciting incident that kicked off the mage and templar war, his action was far from the first act of violence.
was the problem ultimately in how his decision was not truly made with the greater mages safety in mind? vengeance instead of justice? no thought to collateral? yeah. but wrong or right, he spoke the truth when he said that they were already dying, it was just a matter of how quick or slow. of course he targeted the chantry, when inaction in the face of oppression is a sort of violence in its own right.
cant stop thinkin bout charles and erik readin together on the couch but instead of reading with him charles is listening to eriks thoughts while he reads. Live mind commentary ……..
It's interesting to consider the idea that the Outsiders never knew the City could be opened. All their talks about the Outside only ever say they're looking for an exit, a way out and to the Outside. We only know the City can be opened because of B-12.
It makes the opening scene even more impactful. The Outsiders, having spent their lives looking for an exit, watch as the ceiling peels back and reveals a blue sky. The Outside, brought to them.
Expansion of canon so bad it kills all good ongoing fanfics. Many such cases. I mourn for all of them.
