On This Day in Baseball History January 27, 1982: The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies trade veteran players Ivan DeJesus and Larry Bowa. In addition to Bowa going to Chicago, the Cubs get a young prospect and future Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg.
Sandberg was described in the Chicago Tribune article by Jerome Holtzman as being “a 22-year-old middle infielder with good speed but a light bat.” Hindsight truly is 20-20.
