I haven’t posted about this, because this isn’t really a personal tumblr, but it’s a thing I have thought about posting about quite a lot and that I’ve already shared in a bunch of other venues* while talking about it here in a vague way. I think it’s something people need to know about as an option, even if, for me, it hasn’t been a miracle or anything. It could be, for somebody easily, and I don’t want them to have to find out (like I did) from a VICE NEWS YOUTUBE VIDEO.
So I am getting IV ketamine infusions for depression! Here’s a loooooot of some stuff I said about it before, under the cut.
Please, please ask me any questions you might have about this, how it works, what it’s like, even if you think they’re weird. If I can help one other person it will have been worth it. It’s highly effective for around 80-90% of people who haven’t responded to any other treatment, and in five-ish years the new classes of drugs will most likely be based on ketamine.
*(Even my boss, as it turns out when you are getting injected with experimental psychedelics once a week or so, you tend to blow at least one deadline.)
I'm firmly of the belief that this is my business unless I want it to be other people's business. It's very complicated, like all things chronic illness, it's especially and specifically isolating to do something so new, so scary, that so few people have tried. So this is what I am doing: for the past few months I've been getting ketamine infusions for depression and anxiety. I have had these things all my life, I am fortunate to hide in plain sight in some sense, I am not fortunate enough to respond to normal medications and cannot even take the most common ones. You have to clear a lot of shitty hurdles to even get approved for ketamine, that is one of the biggest.
And even then, I'm not lucky enough to be one of the hyped-up-in-TIME-magazine miracles, I am a middle-of-the-road responder, something that isn't talked about much in this next big step in mental health treatment. It is actually hard to overstate just how little information is out there, for this. However, for me, a medium response is more than I have EVER had. But this is physically demanding, time consuming, and expensive. We are all still guinea pigs. I am very lucky to live near one of the few US clinics let alone have help to be able to afford it. I didn't know about ketamine before this June. It could and will and does save and change lives.
I don't like the word "stigma" and I don't care about busting it or "changing the conversation" but I do care about ableism and science and research and doing actual practical stuff to improve the lives of people like me. If I can give someone information that improves their life, disclosure is worth it.
