For Carewyn and Jacob, Past: 12, 13. Present: 5, 10, 14. Future: 2, 3, 6, 7.
Whew! So many wonderful questions!! 🥰 All right -- rapid fire!
Past: What are some of their biggest regrets?
Carewyn's greatest regrets from when she was little are not pressing Jacob more about what was going on at school or about meeting his friends and retaliating against her schoolyard bully, Bobbie Mathis, in the heat of anger and upset by calling him a "stupid Muggle" and hitting way below the belt by insinuating that his absent mother didn't want anything to do with him. (As explanation, this awful boy had just accidentally ripped the skirt of one of her only dresses, all because he wouldn't let go of it when Carewyn tried to get away.) Then, of course, if one counts her school career and beyond, Carewyn blames herself for Rowan's death for the rest of her life, as well as every life she couldn't save during the Second Wizarding War.
Jacob will never not blame himself for Olivia being turned to stone and trapped in the Sunken Vault for so many years and leaving his sister Carewyn and mother Lane to think he either vanished or died when he got stuck in a portrait for seven years. He also blames himself for Duncan's death, as well as Rowan's and Lugh Hopper's, though the second is out of survivor's guilt more than anything. @thatravenpuffwitch
Past: What part of their past (death, other significant event) do they think affects them the most?
Jacob's disappearance shattered Carewyn's whole world. It took her a while for her to find an identity of her own that stood apart from Jacob, just because of how much she'd come to define herself based on her relationship with her older brother when she was little. Rowan's death and the fall-out from it, including the Circle of Khanna, also changed Carewyn forever, but fortunately there was good as well as bad in that particular change.
Well, besides his experience with R and the Cursed Vaults, I'd say Jacob was most shaped by his lonely childhood where he was treated as a delinquent by just about everyone, including his own father. No matter how much Jacob's tried to prove he's not a screw-up who only ever causes trouble for the ones he cares about, that stigma will probably always haunt him.
Present: What kind of people do they usually interact with? Who are their friends, the people they look up to/trust, and who are their “associates”?
Carewyn's best friend in the whole wide world is Bill. He is her right-hand man in all things and, although Bill initially acted like a big brother to her, before long they ended up becoming true equals who often ended up "parenting" their other friends together. Carewyn is also close friends with her fellow "Fireball" Charlie, her ex-boyfriend Andre, Chiara, Talbott, Barnaby, Jae, and Torvus the centaur, and was incredibly close with Rowan until her death. She also deals with Bill, Charlie, Ben, and Merula a lot while working with the Circle of Khanna, since those four are co-leaders of the organization with her, and she both greatly esteems and gets along well with Slytherin's eccentric genius Quidditch Captain, Orion Amari. Oh yes, and one can't forget about her close bonds with her unofficial brother-in-law Duncan, her mother Lane, and -- of course -- her beloved big brother Jacob!
Jacob's closest associate is his sister Carewyn, since his close friend Olivia is currently stone, though he also cherishes his boy best friend, Duncan Ashe and his mother Lane. He also feels deep gratitude and appreciation for Madame Rosmerta, who showed him kindness when he'd needed it most.
Present: What do they always carry with them and why?
Carewyn keeps things like her wand, homework planner, and a spare scrunchie in her schoolbag.
Jacob never goes anywhere without his wand. At present, he also is wearing the scarlet robes Duncan gave him everywhere while keeping them meticulously clean, since he made a promise to himself that he'd be wearing them when he finally avenged Duncan and destroyed R once and for all.
Present: What matters most to them right now?
Both of them want to protect their loves ones and prevent R from getting their hands on the "treasure" inside the Cursed Vaults -- but Carewyn is more focused on it for the sake of justice, while Jacob is a bit more revenge-oriented. Carewyn wants to make sure Rakepick and R can't hurt anyone else the way she and Jacob were hurt, but Jacob feels strongly about wanting to make sure R fails utterly in what they fought so hard for and is destroyed completely for good measure.
Future: Are they content with their future situation? Is there anything they would change?
Carewyn is pretty content, living out a life as a lawyer for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and Orion's legal partner with an adopted "son" and unofficial "stepdaughter"...but being a perfectionist, she'll always feel like she could do more to help others and be a better person, so she'll never be completely satisfied.
Jacob is very happy, traveling the world as a vagabond wizard. The only thing he would change would be to have Duncan experiencing all of these amazing things with him.
Future: How would their beliefs or morals change in the future, if at all?
After everything with the Cursed Vaults goes down, Carewyn actually turns around a lot in her stance on Azkaban. She admittedly never loved dementors, as creatures, but she was a bit more judgmental of the people who ended up in Azkaban before, so she saw their imprisonment as more just as a child than she does as an adult. But after Rakepick is captured and faces Azkaban (spoilers for the good Rakepick AU?), she comes to realize that dementors affect those who actually feel remorse way more than those who don't...and so by the time they come out, those people who had more of a chance to really reform themselves are so traumatized and destroyed by the experience that they really can't. She ends up being a strong advocate for removing the dementors from Azkaban all-together and is very glad when Kingsley Shacklebolt does exactly that post-Second-Wizarding-War.
Jacob doesn't change that much from a morality standpoint, but I do see him maturing a bit more, to the extent that I could -- could -- maybe even see him being a father someday.
Future: How do they react to the changing times? Are they adaptable or do they reject modernity?
Carewyn tends to stick with what she's comfortable with, only adding new technology or magical items to her repertoire when they end up being useful.
Jacob absolutely relishes every new advancement, whether in technology or science. He collects every new gadget he can get his hands on, just to try it out.
Future: Are their friends still a part of their life? Are there people they are no longer in touch with, or newly important people?
Carewyn doesn't see all of her friends that often anymore unless through work (i.e. Talbott, who's an Auror, or Ben, who's a Hitwizard), but she does get together with her old friends now and again. The ones she sees most often are (as mentioned) Talbott and Ben, as well as Chiara and Jae. Her surrogate brothers Bill and Charlie and her old Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall, however, she remains in constant contact with through owl post, and whenever Charlie visits the U.K. and his mother hasn't insisted that he stay at the Burrow, Charlie makes plans to crash at Carewyn's flat. Carewyn also writes a Christmas letter to her old friends at the end of every year and sends a Christmas package to Torvus every year through Hagrid.
Jacob remains very close to Olivia Green for the rest of his life. As an adult he also befriends the Hopper family, particularly Jacob Hopper, and after hiding them in his flat in London during the War, Jacob remains in close contact with the Cattermoles, who have sort of "adopted" him into their family. Jacob also visits Madame Rosmerta at the Three Broomsticks now and again and exchanges letters with Beauxbatons' Headmistress, Madame Maxime, who he befriended after he came to give her students a lecture on applying Muggle chemistry to potion-making.
