James Grout
Physique: Stocky Build Height: 5’ 10" (1.78 m)
James David Grout (October 22, 1927 – June 24, 2012) was an English actor of radio and television. He was best known for playing Chief Superintendent Strange in Inspector Morse. A tall, imposing and increasingly portly figure, Grout served as co-star and support to a string of bigger, more familiar names. He was an actor, known for Mother Love (1989), Inspector Morse (1987) and Born and Bred (1978).
Grout was born in Edmonton, London, the son of Beatrice Anne and William Grout. He trained to be an actor at RADA.
Grout married Noreen, a schooldays' sweetheart. In 1977, they moved on a whim from west London to Malmesbury, Wiltshire, where he contributed a column to the local paper, the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald.
Grout died on 24 June 2012, aged 84, at the Ashgrove nursing home in Purton, Wiltshire, after a long illness.

It's Tux Tuesday again...
Time sure does fly!
Here are three of our favorite guys to celebrate with... 50% tux edition for Strange, and 100% bow tie edition for Max.
James Grout
I fell in love with James Grout watching Inspector Morse, Yes, Minister, All Creatures Great and Small in the 80's.
He did a good job of looking severe.
Or concerned.
And he also looked good in braces. I love the look of a mature, tubby man in braces. They also help to get your trousers down quicker.
Still waiting for Sean Rigby's career to take off in the way it clearly deserves to because damn.
The Endeavour fandom can vary a lot in what we think of Jim Strange, but my Gods Rigby was incredible in every moment. And beautifully, beautifully sets up James Grout's Strange in Inspector Morse. He came into the role almost fresh out of training IIRC, and yet is magnificent from day one.
Really, really hope he gets some more awesome roles and more attention soon (and, crucially, whichever of the sizes he's had he has now or in the future; it bothers me like hell that that might be a factor).
You're a clever sod, but you don't say the right things to the right people.
Chief Superintendent Strange, Inspector Morse, season 1 episode 1
p.s. dont call me out like this, you sod.
Morse: But I must say Lewis has worked particularly hard on it. He’s been very imaginative.
Strange: Lewis? Imaginative?
Morse: It comes of his long years working with me. Something’s bound of rub off in the end.
