Acting Dynasties: James Larkin and Charles Edwards

James: actor/director born 17th March 1963, in Surrey, UK. Most known for: Doctors, Eastenders, Call the Midwife. Trained at RADA.  Charles: actor born 1st October 1969, in Surrey, UK. Most known for: Downton Abbey, The Terror, The 39 Steps. Trained at Guildhall.

Dublino (1° parte)

Ed eccomi a Dublino, ultima tappa in terra irlandese. Molti sono i luoghi di interesse ma dato il poco tempo a disposizione ho fatto prima un breve giro panoramico in bus tra le strade affollate per ammirare velocemente alcuni luoghi per poi soffermarmi più a lungo in altri che desideravo visitare in questo primo viaggio. Andando verso il Docklands, la vecchia zona portuale di Dublino oggetto di un’importante riqualificazione urbana, è possibile vedere un vasto complesso di edifici in stile contemporaneo come il Convention Centre, il Grand Canal Theatre e la Grand Canal Square, il particolare ponte a forma di arpa dell’architetto Calatrava chiamato Samuel Beckett Bridge.

Costeggiando le banchine del porto, piene di dublinesi che fanno jogging, s’incontra anche il Famine Memorial, una serie di statue in bronzo che raccontano la tragica devastazione provocata in Irlanda dalla Grande Carestia del 1845. Proprio da quel punto partivano le “navi bara” come la Jeanie Johnston (una replica che si trova lì affianco) che portavano i disperati irlandesi a intraprendere un lungo viaggio verso gli Stati Uniti. 

Molto importante è anche il Garden of Remembrance, situato vicino a Parnell Square, dedicato alla memoria di tutti coloro che hanno perso la vita per la libertà irlandese. 

In O’Connell Street, la strada principale della città, si possono vedere diverse statue tra le quali lo scrittore James Joyce, il nazionalista Daniel O’Connell, il leader socialista James Larkin ma anche The Spire, il monumento che rappresenta la lotta per l'indipendenza dell'Irlanda tra irlandesi e inglesi.

Invece, in Suffolk Street si trova la famosa statua di Molly Malone.

Caratteristici sono i quartieri georgiani con case dalle porte variopinte e battenti d’ottone ed il Temple Bar, l’antico quartiere affacciato sul fiume Liffey regno dei tipici pub.
