Beach Slang @ House of Blues - Chicago - 4/6/17

The last time I saw Beach Slang half the band members were different. I was thrilled to finally see these guys (Bottom Lounge) -  I’d heard great things and loved their EP and new record. At that point I’d had no idea what an incredible front-person James was, and that he could carry them all on his shoulders and audible quite nicely if he needed or wanted to. That ability came in handy over the last year, because the band saw their drummer depart, and their guitar player relieved of his duties due to allegations he sexually assaulted a girl. Beach Slang had tour dates already booked, and so James took his guitar, kept those dates, and played them as “Quiet Slang,” guitar only versions of the band’s songs. As if those blows were not enough, one more kick in the teeth came when all of James’s guitars were stolen. (I cannot put into words how much stealing musicians' gear fucking pisses me off, BTW. You have to be a certain kind of fucking asshole to take a person's creative extension and livelihood. Steal his car: he can take a bus. Steal his guitar and you fuck over a lot of people. Not to mention the impact of the emotional attachment. But I digress….). The one silver lining was Tommy Stinson reaching out with one of Paul Westerberg’s guitars, and one of his own basses. If you know anything about James and Beach Slang you know his affinity for the Replacements. That was a wonderful end to a shitty story, if there could be one…

Minus the Bear headlined this show. I literally knew nothing about them. I was really just coming for Beach Slang’s set (so I scooted to the back of the room after Slang was finished). I walked in at the end of Bayonne (who I kind of enjoyed!). As Beach Slang was taking the stage, a guy with a very thick accent to my right started screaming and waving.“CULLY!! CULLY SYMINGTON!! AYE MATE!!!” !!!!!! “Wait - what did you say? That’s Cully Symington??”(I couldn’t see Cully’s face - his symbol blocked it completely). “Yeah!” 

I seriously had no idea Cully was drumming with them. He did the whole 2012 Afghan Whigs tour, among other things. After digging around the internet, I found that this apparently was posted about quite a bit. I left Instagram in 2013, and Facebook in 2015. So unless Twitter’s algorithms allow me to receive information, I miss many things…waddya gonna do…

So….the show was fun, and the new guitar player holds her own. Many Rob Thomas/Santana jokes, a few about Jame’s hair, a fan hug, a threat of a fan hug, a list of who people are telling James he looks like (someone offered Michael J Fox, which he has added to the running list…), and about a 40 minute or so set. They did say they were planning a fall tour as headliners, and yesterday they posted some current headline dates (none of which are near me…). Looking forward to the fall and a much longer, fuller set.
