Don’t Give Up the Ship
During the War of 1812, American Naval Officer Captain James Lawrence (October 1, 1781 – June 4, 1813) was in command of the USS Chesapeake and after early successes against the Royal Navy, he was mortally wounded during a single ship action against HMS Shannon commanded by Philip Broke. Lawrence is best known today for his last words spoken during his dying command: "Don't give up the ship!" The phrase remains a popular naval battle cry, and it also inspired Oliver Hazard Perry's personal battle flag, which he adopted soonafter to commemorate his dead friend.

James Lawrence
James Lawrence was born in Burlington,New Jersey in 1781. At age 17 he entered the US navy, four years later in 1802 he became a commissioned lieutenant.
During the Tripoli Wars he served under Stephen Decatur on the Intrepid as first lieutenant. Which on February the 16th 1804 successfully destroyed the Philadelphia a former US ship that had been taken over by Tripolitans. Despite his participation in this action Lawrence did not receive the two months pay awarded to other the other officers aboard the Intrepid by Congress.
In 1811 he was promoted to master commandant and then captain in 1813. During the War of 1812 Lawrence commanded two ships the Hornet and the Chesapeake . The Hornet was successful in sinking the HMS Peacock.
The Chesapeake unfortunately was taken after a a naval challenge with the HMS Shannon that took place on June,1, 1813 in the open ocean not to far from Massachusetts. Although both ships were 38 gun frigates they were unequal matched. The captain of the Shannon, Phillip Broke had commanded his ship for seven years and regularly drilled his crew, while Lawrence had only been given command of the Chesapeake on the 20th of May and had a crew made up of men that had been serving on different ships. When Chesapeake set out Lawrence was flying his banner that said “Free trade and Sailors rights”. During the challenge Lawrence was shot twice once in the leg, then in the torso. These shots proved fatal, His dying words were “ Don’t give up the ship”. These words would later be emblazoned on a flag flown by Oliver Hazard Perry aboard the Lawrence (named in Lawrence’s honor) and eventually became the motto of the US navy.
