A Reliable Buddy
This year I plan to commit to choosing a mentor and sponsorship that will meet with where I am in my career. I think this would be a good choice because depending on the mentor they could help me on where I am and guide me on where to go next.
A Patient Mentor
A mentor is someone who answers all your questions, can simplify confusing things, and explains as they go. A mentee is someone who can listen, open to learning, and speaks up when confused. At ICON, if you're not there during the externship, you would be able to enter through word of mouth with someone vouching for you.
A Objective-Focused Client
A project that we visited was two historical elementary schools, being repurposed into residentials units with new additions for more space. The client is a non-profit organization, watching a meeting of an architect, owner, and contractor all negotiate and decide what to do next with the project is very interesting. As, even when starting to build it up they are still choosing what kind of material goes where. So, even if the plans are done, the final design isn't.
It looks like a place for community
Intercultral competence is when different groups of people like, gender, race, or other are not segregated from the rest of the firm. At ICON, I noticed intercutrual competence mostly in meetings. As everyone who wants to pitch into a conversation can. No one gets ignored because they are in a certain group.
Workplace Communcation
Based on the reading, there are many different stories depending on the firm and how they handle things in general. Whether its sexual harassment not being taken care of or having a space that accepts you.
From what I have seen at ICON on the first day, it seems like everyone makes sure the team is caught up on what everyone else is doing. There were a couple meetings we went to that made sure everyone knew what they had to do for the week. Even during lunch, there was a group discussion on what happens out in the field. All to update and inform the teams what is happening with each project they are working on.
Spyro (Spyro the Dragon shot)
Ingredients: 2 parts Blue Curacao 2 parts Cranberry juice 1 part Fireball Cinnamon Whisky
Directions: Mix the first two ingredients into a shot glass, then top it off with the Fireball. Drink and breath flame.
