When the song lyrics in the musical hit different and suddenly your lost staring at a wall in the middle of a Monday afternoon because Jack Kelly (and company) sung the lines
âWe're doing something no one's even tried
And, yes, we're terrified
But watch what happensâ
What do you mean this line came from a musical about newspaper, and that musical about newspapers changed my life? Huh?

Javy sat in the car, driving to your house to collect you for your very first date. Youâd first caught his eye when he was at the beach with the rest of the Dagger Squad; while they were enjoying their day, you were working as a lifeguard. Youâd agreed to move over for a little while with your aunt, Penny; having just finished law school and wanting a fresh start away from Missouri, she offered to take you in for the summer.
And then when heâd noticed youâd picked up a shift or two at the Hard Deck, he was convinced it was fate telling him to just ask you out; he could imagine his guardian angels face planting as they watched him helplessly pine over you from across the bar. Needless to say, Jake was sick of it. You were hot and if he hadnât been Coyoteâs best friend, heâd probably have wined and dined you himself by now.
Jake shook his head, taking the two now-empty bottles of beer back to the bar and requesting another round. You handed him the drinks and he passed you a slip of paper. âWhatâs this?â You ask with a small, questioning smile and he shrugs, almost unnoticeably nodding his head to his companion watching the ordeal. âHis numberâ he says, leaning closer to you, then taking a napkin and scribbling something else. âAnd if things donât work out with you and Coyote, gimme a call sugarâ he winks and you roll your eyes âhis names Coyote?â You ask and he smirks. âCalled Javy, itâs his callsignâ he tells you and you try to hide your smile, tucking the small letter in your pocket.
Later that evening, when Javy was getting ready for bed he heard his phone buzzing from the countertop as he brushed his teeth. âHello?â He answers and thereâs silence for a moment âHi.. is this Javy, or Coyote? Thatâs what your friend told me to call youâ the voice said in response and Javy froze, that was your voice. Quickly realising he hadnât responded, he was fast to reply âhi! Yes, yes this is heâ he says then cringes wondering why he said it like that. âOh thank godâ he hears mumbled and you quickly give him your name âim-â âPennyâs niece?â He asks and you nod, forgetting he couldnât see you âyeah, thatâs meâ you say and before you could say anything else he quickly blurts âwould you like to go out for dinner? Tomorrow maybe?â You were silent for a little while and he heard a small, almost relieved sigh come from the other end of the line âIâd love tooâ you answer and he smiles âgreat! Pick you up at six?â He asks âitâs a dateâ you confirm âIâll text you my addressâ you tell him, before you both hang up and you shoot him your address.
Now here he was, speaking to Jake through the car phone âIâm in the car, I just canât waitâ he begins âto pick her up for our very first dateâ Javy tells him and Jake laughs âfinally. Whereâre you taking her?â He asks âthat restaurant on the front, one with the beach deckâ Javy confirms and Jake hums. Javy pads his fingers against the steering wheel, mulling over things in his mind âis it cool if I hold her hand?â He asks âwhat are you, twelve?â Jake asks and Javy rolls his eyes.
âIs it wrong if I think itâs lame to dance?â You ask Penny as he finishes the final touches on your hair and she shakes her head âjust go with the flowâ she answers, smiling at you. âWill he like my stupid hair?â You ask, as youâd asked your aunt to do a lovely up-do which you now realise makes you look slightly silly. âOf course he will. The boy made heart eyes at you when that guy puked on youâ Penny said, jokingly and grimace; remembering the evening when a sailor got a bit too âsea-sickâ and couldnât get to the bin.
âWill she guess that I didnât know what to wear?â Javy asks and Jake hums âprobably not, sheâll be as nervous as you.â Jake replies and Javy relaxes âyeah, probablyâ âbut if you do look stupid Iâll make sure she sends me picsâ typical Jake. âYeah, thanks man.â Javy grunts, jokingly but it did ease his tensed shoulders slightly.
âIâm just scared of what she thinksâ
âIâm just scared of what he thinksâ you tell Penny and she smiles at you, hugging you close. âHe looks at you like you hung the scars, babyâ she comforts, giving you a big hug âyeah and if he hurts you Iâll kill himâ maverick says, walking in the room and you jokingly laugh âthanks, Peteâ you say and he nods âanytime, kiddo.â âWhereâs he taking you?â Penny asks âthat restaurant on the pier. Supposed to be nice but he makes me nervous so I really canât eat.â And thereâs a knock at the door, maverick opens it. Javyâs eyes widen but he nods at his instructor. âMavâ âCoyoteâ he replies and points at the boy âhome by eleven, no laterâ he tells him with a stern look as Javy gulps âshut up Mavâ you say, laughing and pushing your uncle, coming into Javyâs view.
âWow.â He says, looking you over and you smile nervously âyou look incredibleâ he says and you giggle ânot too bad yourself, Javyâ you reply. âShall we?â He holds his arm out and you take it. âLetâs goâ you reply, turning to your aunt and uncle âdonât wait upâ you say, not wanting them to stay up longer than necessary âwe willâ Penny says, knowing she wonât be able to sleep until she knows your home safe. âYou kids have fun!â Maverick says as Javy opens the car door for you and you smile at him, a light blush on your cheeks and he walks to the other side. The two watch you pull out and drive away.
You pull into the restaurant parking lot and grimace âcan I be honest?â You ask as he takes the keys out of his car âof courseâ he says âIâm really nervous and feel sick I donât know if I can eat a full mealâ you say and he smiles âcan I be honest too?â He asks and you nod âsame.â You laugh âdid you want to get drinks or something?â You suggest âhow about we share an entree and then go? Donât want you drinking on an empty stomach youâll make yourself sickâ he says and you try to hide your smile as you look the other way âsounds goodâ you reply as he watches your blush grow in the wing mirror. You head into the restaurant and end up getting a seat outside on the seafront, sharing a basket of garlic bread as the conversation flows.
Eventually the conversation lulls into a comfortable silence and you look out onto the horizon, watching the sun set âwow, this nights almost overâ you say, seeing the watch on your wrist ticking faster than expected, eight at night. âWish it didnât have to end so soonâ you continue and he replies âit doesnâtâ âhonest?â âHonest, letâs make this night last forever.â He says ordering a few more drinks for the two of you.
âGolden hours making you glowâ he says, the drink making him almost too honest. You laugh âif I was pregnant Iâd take the complimentâ you say, jokingly and his eyes darken a little, stomach twisting. âStill, you look beautiful.â He says and you blush darkly, grinning as you thank him and watch the sun go down âwhen you smile I met insideâ he says, eager to make you blush more; to which heâs successful. You ask about his work and he responds with the information heâs allowed to tell you of his current mission: detailing when heâd chosen to join the navy and the path it took to get him into the pilots seat.
You wow at his tale, hung on every one of his words âgod and Iâm just a law school graduate working in a bar and volunteering on a beachâ you say, taking another sip of your drink to empty the glass âIâm not worthy of a minute of your timeâ you shrug and smile, as he shakes his head in denial âIâm not worthy of yours. God knows how I even managed to get you to humour this evening.â He tells you. âA lawyer? Thatâs a great jobâ he continues and you shrug âI donât knowâ you sign âhonestly,â you whisper, clearly slightly tipsy as you motion for him to move closer so you can tell him a secret âI donât even know if I want to be a lawyerâ you say, then visibly relax as if that statement is a weight off your shoulders. âThatâs why I moved out here for the summer with Pen and Mavâ you go to continue âmy parents are pushing me to try get placement and start my own firm, but that their dream, not mineâ you say and sigh âwhat do you want?â He asks and you look at him, slightly puzzled âme?â You ask and he nods âno oneâs ever asked me thatâ you say and he takes your hand in his, stroking the back of it gently with his thumb âwell I am. What do you want to do?â He asks and you speak without missing a beat âI want to be an elementary teacher.â You say with a small smile. âBut thereâs no money in itâ you admit and purse your lips and he almost has to force himself not to say that he makes enough money to comfortably support the two of you if you wanted to take that path.
He looks around the two of you, the occupant number in the restaurant and outside slowly growing larger âI really wish it was only me and youâ he says, annoyed that people had the audacity to crash your date by enjoying their own evening. âReally?â You grin and he nods âIâm jealous of everybody in the roomâ he says and you cock your head to the side in confusion, a smile still present on your face âand whyâs that?â âCause they all get to see how gorgeous you are, tooâ he admits. You blush again, eyes wide as they darken slightly, lids heavy as you look back at him âplease donât look at me with those eyesâ he groans, running his hands over his face âwhat eyes?â You laugh âthe eyes thatâd get you very far in my bedroomâ he replies and you smirk âtheyâre the only eyes Iâve gotâ he chuckled âmâkay, baby Maverick.â He jokes.
âIf this is what our first date is like, imagine the second!â You state and he shakes his head âplease donât hint that youâre capable of liesâ he begs and you shake your head no âno, I want to see you again, Javyâ you say, leaning forward slightly to tell him and he victoriously celebrates in the comfort of his own mind. He looks from your eyes to your lips and back again âI dread the thought of our very first kissâ he admits and you crease your brows âand whyâs that?â You ask as he leans ever closer âcause I donât think Iâll be able to stop.â He mutters âtonight, a target Iâm probably gonna missâ he grumbles and you smile widely. âWell you miss all of the shots you donât takeâ you inform and he smirks, following your eyes as you watch the sea lap onto the beach.
âLetâs goâ he says and you raise a brow, âwhat? Donât like a little sand between your toes, Missouri girl?â He teases and you narrow your eyes âand you do, flyboy?â He laughs and you stand up, the two of you determined to race to the beach. âCan I pay our tab please?â You ask the lady at the bar who smiles and nods, heading to grab the card reader. Javy follows her without you noticing, only returning with the receipt âwhereâd the lady go?â You ask, confused with your card in hand. Javy just hands you the receipt and smiles victoriously. You look at him with wide eyes and slap his chest lightly âugh Javy!â You scold âyou didnât have to do that!â âWhat, is chivalry dead?â He asks âno but I didnât mind payingâ you say and he holds his hands up âI suggested the dateâ he says âI suggested the drinksâ you challenge but sigh as he wins the conversation âfine, but next time Iâm payingâ you say. (You donât)
You head outside and he looks at the beach from the decking âIâll race youâ he says and you offer him a challenging look at he prepares to run âwait wait!â You say frantically and he creases his brows as you lean to remove the heels from your feet. âOh weâre getting serious now?â He asks with a smirk and you give a determined glare âcâmon âCoyoteâ,â you tease his callsign âletâs see how fast you can really goâ you threaten and he swallows the lump in his throat âoh I can go forever.â He says and you connect eyes with a knowing look.
â3.. 2..â he begins counting but you break of running and he sprints after you âhey! No fair you chested!â He shouts and you laugh loudly âyou snooze, you loose; petrol pigeon!â You reply but feel hands wrap around your waist as youâre pulled to the grounds, but your fall is cushioned by a hard chest and a pair of soft, but strong hands. You laugh but it quickly quietens as you lay on top of him, hands on his chest, faces close and eyes connected. âHonest, letâs make this night last foreverâ you beg him and he shakes his head âLetâs make this last foreverâ he corrects and you giggle âforever?â He nods âand everâ he confirms, pulling you up and offering you a hand to hold as you walk along the beach, toes getting wet from the salty sea water every now and then.
âI really enjoyed this evening, Javy. Thank you.â You say and grin, approaching his truck and he nods in response, turning to you and placing his hands respectfully on your hips. âThe pleasure is all mine, pretty girlâ he replies, your hands moving to his chest as he pulls you ever closer. The sun is set now, the only light; the moon illuminating your face as your wide, expectant eyes look up at him. âYouâre glowing.â He whispers and you smile âand you still havenât kissed meâ you whisper back, as he finally leans down and captures your lips with his own, a gentle yet deep embrace lasting for a little less time than either of you would liked.
âForever and everâ you say quietly and pull away âletâs make this last foreverâ he says, opening the passenger side door to allow you to sit inside, walking around and getting in the drivers side to return you safe and sound to your aunt and uncleâs home, you look at the clock. â10:58pmâ it reads as you pull into the driveway. The lights are still on.
Your heels never got back on your feet and you pad back to your house bare-footed, waving at him as you knock and Maverick comes to unlock the door and lets you in. His instructor looks at Coyote and nods with a thumb up and Coyote mirrors his action; waiting for the door to fully shut until he drives back home.
âSo.. how was that?â Penny asks âwhere are your shoes?â Maverick asks at the same time as they both look at you expectantly. You only look star stuck as you stand there in disbelief. âI think Iâm gonna marry himâ

Y/n "Peregrine" Seresin was very good at keeping secrets.
She kept secrets for her family, for her friends, and even for random people at school. Anyone who knew her knew that if someone told her a secret, she would take it with her to the grave.
She would even put them in a notebook. It was a black leather bound one that her father had given her for Christmas one year.
Some of them were small secrets, like who ate the last waffle at breakfast. Others were larger, more incriminating. People cheating on tests. And each other.
Writing them down kept them out of her mind.
Y/n always wrote the date, which she always found weird. But she did it anyways.
All these things came out, one day or another. But there was one thing written in that notebook that she hoped and prayed to God would never come out. At least, not until she was ready for it to.
She wrote it down hastily one drunken night in Milan, Italy. It was her second deployment there.
Y/n wrote it in messy handwriting, on a page somewhere in the middle of the book. It stood out against the rest for the sole fact that she wrote it in bright red sharpie instead of the black pen she had used her entire life.
"I started dating Javy 'Coyote' Machado, Jake's best friend."
She put the date, like always, under the words. And then she signed her name right next to Javy's.
The more she looked back on it, the more she realized something:
Her and Javy's names together on the same page began to look less daunting as the months passed by. There even came a time where she saw that piece of paper as a promise.
Though there were times when the fear crept in, during the late hours of the night in the middle of a deployment. Somewhere where she had no one to hug her and tell her it would be fine.
Y/n knew she was playing a dangerous game here, a very dangerous game.
A game that if she lost, it could ruin a lot of the things she held so dear to her heart.
"Javy, honey, I'm close." She moaned into his shoulder.
It had been two years since that day. The day they had signed their names on a piece of paper. The day they sealed their fate.
They were currently in some hotel room in the middle of nowhere, on track to report for a new mission tomorrow.
That mission couldn't be farther from there minds right now.
All that mattered to them was the feeling of their bodies pressed against each other. Their lips had to"I know, baby I know," he said, pressing a soft kiss to her shoulder as he thrust into her again. "Not much longer honey, I promise."
One of his hands was pinning hers into the mattress, stroking her thumb every once in a while. His free hand moved down her body, his thumb finding her clit and rubbing slow, consistent circles.
Y/n let out a string of incoherent words, a plea for Javy to move hsi thumb faster.
He did.
She moaned at the feeling of her high finally washing over her, her back arching in pleasure.
Javy thrust into her, his pace increasing as he chased his high. He bit down on her shoulder as his orgasm washed over him, his cum spilling into her.
It was the heavy breathing of two lovers and the monotonous hum of the A.C. unit that filled the silence of the next few moments.
Y/n brought her lips to his cheek in a chaste kiss. "I love you." she whispered. "I love you."
Javy pulled out, pulling Y/n closer to him, and wrapping her in his arms.
"You did so well for me, my love. So well," he whispered, stroking her hair.
Y/n put one of her hands behind his neck, pulling him down for a kiss.
His body rolled partially on top of hers, their legs tangling once more.
They kissed softly. Nothing like the feverish kisses they had been exchanging just moments before.
Y/n cherished moments like this. And yes, she loved it when Javy ravished her, but she loved what came after even more.
The way they kissed each other, softly, deeply, lovingly.
The way their hands ran over the curves of each other's bodies. A silent promise that they belonged to no one but each other.
Javy got up, picking up his boxers from wherever they had landed on the floor in the heat of the early evening.
She hissed at the loss of his warmth against her body.
"I'll be right back baby, I'm just getting a towel," he said.
He was gentle when wiping her legs.
Javy grinned at the bruises and bite marks he had left there, a silent but powerful thing that said she was his.
"You didn't leave any on my neck, right?" Y/n said, her voice a little hoarse from the sounds that Javy dragged out of her. "They're all below my collarbones?"
"There's a few on your shoulder. But none on your neck. I made sure of that." Javy said sincerely.
He threw Y/n one of his sweatshirts and a pair of her underwear, as he put on a pair of sweatpants.
"Okay. That's fine. As long as nobody can see them."
It was a rule they came up with a long time ago, no marks above the collar line. They agreed on it when Jake pointed out a hickey Javy had given her the night before.
Y/n said it was from a hookup she engaged in a few days ago, some guy from a bar, she told Jake.
Surprisingly, thankfully. Jake believed her, simply telling her to be careful.
As Javy slammed his cock into her that night, he was careful to not leave any marks on her neck.
Though he made up for it by sucking on every other available patch of skin there was. Her clavicle, her breasts, her stomach, her thighs.
Javy loved leaving marks on her thighs.
Sitting up, she admired the current condtion of her inner thighs. The skin bloomed in different shades of red and purple. She spotted a few bite marks among the colors.
"Like what you see?" Javy asked, his mouth etched in a smirk.
"Not your best work, Machado." She sighed teasingly, "But I guess this will have to do."
He rolled his eyes. "So fucking needy." He mumbled with a smirk.
He handed her a cup of water. She mumbled her thanks.
"Your brother texted me. He said we're meeting at the hard deck tomorrow," said Javy, showing her his phone.
He sat on the bed, turning on one of the lamps on the nightstand next to him. Y/n put her cup down on the nightstand near her side of the bed.
"What time?" she said, She pulled the duvet over her body, snuggling into Javy's side, her arm draping over his torso.
"Five-Thirty."
"Good. Cause I'm sleeping in tomorrow," said Y/n.
Javy laughed softly. "Of course, you will."
They talked like that, late into the night. The stories of their deployments, the people they met, the places they saw. All this they whispered to each other in the darkness of the night.
All the time they pressed kisses to each other's faces, relishing the fact that they were in one another's arms. Home. safe and Sound.
They fell asleep like that, holding each other as they had done so many nights before. The nights like these made it seem like this could be less of a secret and more of a reality.
"Someday." Y/n told herself before, "Someday this won't have to be something between the two of us."
She harbored the same thought before she went to bed, the tightening of Javy's arms around her finally lulling her to sleep.
