they lapse into silence, looking at each other in the too bright florescent lights of gus's kitchen. it's been almost a year since the last time shawn blew into town, pink cheeked and slightly manic, fresh off his latest odd job. 

gus sighs and he wants to be angry at shawn for dropping in on him out of the blue, for saying he won't leave,, for all the years he was gone. but part of gus is 18 years old again, watching shawn in the yellow lamplight and being too afraid to make him stay. the years have been good to shawn, have leveled out his features from a lanky teenage boy to a grown man. gus has no doubt shawn still acts like that stupid kid - he always did resolve to never grow up - and gus is no better. the same want trembles within him, old and familiar. 

He turns away before it can make him act, cross the distance between him and shawn, crash their mouths together so he doesn't have to say things like /I missed you/ or /I needed you/ or /please don't leave again/. 

instead he just takes a slow, even breath and then says, "I have to work in the morning, shawn."

"there, decision made. eat your breakfast so I can take you to school." shawn shoves a spoonful of grape nuts in his mouth and makes a face. this is definitely the worst possible option. present "it's very simple," says the main pointing a gun first at juliet, bound to a drain pipe on the floor, and then at gus, who is bound beside her. "choose which one lives or they both die."

ok I need to know about "sasha’s coming out video"

me and @nyarlathotwink have an absolute friends Horrible Podcasters AU, where the characters from absolute friends are all Horrible Podcasters and have like, a Leftism Podcast because that’s BASICALLY the modern equivalent of what all the characters from absolute friends did in their twenties. 

the biggest plot point of this au is that sasha realizes he’s gay during quarantine, panics, deletes his entire internet presence, then comes back a month later with 1) a coming out video, and 2) a huge callout post for all his former friends and co-podcasters (except teddy who he’s sleeping with obviously) because he’s an asshole and he wants to remake his life by destroying all his relationships

also this callout isn’t like, cynical or disingenuous, it’s just how he processes his feelings because he’s a big baby

in like a year the podcast is back together

also everyone involved is a big enough internet celebrity that this drama gets into some smaller online tabloids kdjnkjsdnknskgd

the wip documents, “sasha’s coming out video,” “podcast au timeline,” and “internet drama rag” all have to do with this

top 5 "underrated" star trek episodes (however you want to define that)

5. TNG S7:E07 “Dark Page” Dark Page is actually my go to when I want to feel sad about tng because it absolutely breaks my heart. I think everyone in it has a really good performance and I for one like learning more about Troi family drama

4. ENT S2:E7 “The Seventh” I did almost put Marauders here because I love Marauders but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone talk about the Seventh which is strange because it’s a great T’Pol episode where you learn more about her past and also has some pretty great Trip moments. I’m very excited to rewatch this

3. VOY S3:E10 “Warlord” idk if warlord is actually underrated but I don’t think Jennifer Lien gets enough props for her amazing performance and also it’s the episode that broke up Kes and Neelix which I really appreciate from a moral standpoint

2. DS9 S5:E4 “...Nor The Battle Strong” a really killer Jake episode. I don’t think they gave Cirroc Lofton a lot to do but when they did he absolutely crushed it and I think it was a pretty solid story

1. ENT S4:E11 “Observer Effect” I will never stop talking about how good I think observer effect is. I don’t think it’s necessarily underrated in terms of good episodes from enterprise but I think it gets over looked in terms of all of Star Trek with is a shame because it’s GREAT and I love it.

heyyy!!! exciting that you’re watching ds9! I enjoyed reading your reactions :). (I may reblog/respond more later) (for example it’s very understandable not to develop a weird obsession with ferengi / quodo ahahaha) (also KIRA… I remember my initial reaction to her as intense relief – complicated passionate female character with actual plot roles)

AHAHAH I may yet develop to share your Quodo obsession, WHO KNOWS, but I was surprised at what a complicated relationship they have from the get go!  And how shippy moments like, uh, “kiss my staff,” are even without shipping goggles!  Although maybe I do have a bit of yours to be noticing secondhand ‘jazzy’s right, there’s something here!’  But I think right now I’m more in line with what I remember from your first time watching… and yeah I get you re: relief!  She’s ‘allowed’ to be angry, and that’s a good thing!  (Dax, for example, has plot roles, but she doesn’t (yet?) have the ~passion.)

I didn’t watch much of ds9 and I don’t think I watched chronologically, but I remember having similar thoughts re bashir and garak (which autocorrected to bash it and fatal lol). Eventually I really enjoyed odo and his very much non-humanness and navigating his relationship with… whoever it was he had a relationship with, I forget. Anyway, good post!

I am pretty sure he does not ACTUALLY have a relationship with Quark lol, unless you mean friendship by relationship.

!!!!!! MY FAVORITE OF THE TREKS!!!! TO BOLDLY SIT!!!! I love this show, in case you couldn't tell lol I hope you keep watching, it definitely only gets better

TO BODLY SIT lol I love it.  (also, hi!!!!!).  When I was a kid and watching both TNG and DS9 as they came out, I very much preferred TNG, I thought DS9 was relatively boring, but I wonder if as an adult that opinion will/has reversed.  To whatever extent it’s about internal politics on a space station... that’s a lot more my jam now than every week a new Planet of Hats.  (Not that I don’t sometimes love the hats!  But.  Y’know.  Relatively).

(I could say that’s why I’m watching it now but HONESTLY the reason’s mostly that jazzy’s been filling my dash with ds9 posts for years and years....)

This issomething I am trying to grow out of as a writer, but I use almost identicalthird-person omniscient for most of my fics (don’t fix it if it isn’t brokenand all that)…so I legitimately do not know which of the 3POs I’d fuck, marry or kill…they’reall pretty annoying, to be honest. 

18: a detail you’re really proud of putting in one of yourfics

Just so you know, I tried valiantlyto come up with something serious for this one and failed. I’d say pretty much anythingout of the Groucho Marx crossover fic, even though I was aware that maybe two people would have been exposed to enough about both Deep Space Nine and the various Marx Brothers films to catch all the details. For instance, I had Groucho Marx talk to Morn and commenton his never shutting up while mentioning that he had a brother who never shutup either (one of the other actors in Marx Brothers films never speaks on camera).

26: what’s your favorite part about fanfiction?

Iarrived at the fanfiction party very late (in 2012, at age 23) and wasimmediately amazed that such a thing could be legal, free, and open to all.Here were entire novels – some veering into Tolkienesque epics – about my mostbeloved characters, all written without any profit in mind save artisticsatisfaction and the enjoyment of the readers. Quite frankly, it seemed likesomething that should not exist and yetflourished without any help (other than a publishing platform, of course, andmany of those hindered more than they helped). So, I guess it’s a mixture ofits sheer improbability as a medium, its accessibility, and its amazingcommunity.

J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)

This is how I find like 90% of my fandoms I’ll be totally honest, I didn’t know what Steven Universe was until I saw it on the Internet and I didn’t know what the lone gunmen were until @thesylverlining kept putting them on my dash and I didn’t know what Lucifer was until I saw it on Tumblr. Devilman Crybaby? ALSO TUMBLR. I don’t get out much I find everything on the internet.

A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.

Right now I’m of course in x files hell so I’m super into any combination of the gunmen and Mulder (who I ship in a giant 4 way pile), shipping Langly with any decent man that wanders into his view, and also the Mulder and Scully friendship. I’m also still crying over a dozen combos of every member of Dethklok and my good old standby Quark/Everyone

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

OKAY SO, NICHE FANDOMS, I NEED TO KNOW WHY I’M DRAWN TO THEM? Just lately it’s been increasingly ‘you know what I need? a fandom with like 3 whole people in it.’ and then I get in it and I have to spend all my time either making the content (HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BE LAZY WHEN I AM HAVING TO ACTUALLY MAKE THINGS TO SEE THEM) or dragging other people into it

Also because I want to put something for the second Z: the worst part about being interested in the lone gunmen is there is an okay chunk of fic but it’s all written in the 90s and 00s which, as you know from DS9 90s fic hell, is almost uniformly extremely bad.

Also they all think Langly is either a heterosexual or a top and I take extreme umbrage with that idea, absolute extreme umbrage.

Y - What are your secondhand fandoms (i.e., fandoms you aren’t in personally but are tangentially familiar with because your friends/people on your dash are in them)?

Right now the good place, never watched it, see lots of it and nod along a lot IT LOOKS GOOD AND I’LL PROBABLY CATCH IT AT SOME POINT the thing is that I don’t usually have Secondhand Fandoms for long because I get lured into looking at it 75% of the time.
