The Writer: A Thriller by James Patterson; J.D. Barker
Pub date - 3/17/25
I started reading the Alex Cross books as they were published in the 90’s (I spent much of the early to mid 1990’s recuperating from (14) surgeries after being hit by a speeding car as a pedestrian. I was in the hospital or at home and I’ve never been overmuch for tv shows, napping doesn’t work for me, so I spent a lot of time reading.
I hadn’t read many of Patterson’s collaborations however, so I was really happy to receive an early copy of The Writer (thank you so much Little, Brown and Company!) and wow, I was immediately pulled into the story and it held me rapt! The Writer was a highly enjoyable read and kept me turning the pages, eager to find out more - I didn’t want to stop reading this one.
*police procedural
*so very twisty
*the pacing
*kept me guessing
I hadn’t read J.D. Barker’s writing before, but I enjoyed this so much that I will definitely be reading more of his work 🙂
An absolute recommendation!
Many thanks to Little, Brown and Company and NetGalley for the DRC
Death of the Black Widow by James Patterson and J.D. Barker She destroys the men she loves and escapes every time. The most dangerous killer James Patterson has ever created is also his most seductive. On his first night with Detroit PD, Officer Walter O’Brien is called to a murder scene. A terrified twenty-year-old has killed her kidnapper. The young woman is also a brilliant escape artist. Her bold flight from police custody makes the case impossible to solve and, for Walter, even more impossible to forget. Now a detective, his fascination with the missing woman is approaching obsession. This deadly string of secrets didn’t begin in his home city but he’s going to make sure it ends there. I don't know about you guys but I am a HUGE James Patterson fan! Honestly there aren't many of his books that I haven't read and each and every one of them I finish in a day because I always get lost in them and this one was no different! I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say what I think about the book! This one is a little different. It has a paranormal twist but it adds to the mystery and the adventure! The pace is great and the mystery of the woman is beyond interesting! It splits between the present and from Walter's first meeting with the mysterious gray eyed woman! The murders have been going on for hundreds of years so the question is is there a group of black widows or is there one person? Overall it was a gripping and entertaining thriller turner that had me up long after my bedtime! Here are my Top Ten-ish Mystery/thriller/crime fiction of 2021. This is what I read the most so these are the best of the best. Carol Wyer and Angela Marsons with some great British crime fiction. None of their characters are safe 😱 I’m Team Teddy all the way 👨🏼🏫😂 Every teacher is 😉 Forget Me Not is a great story from Oliva. Coben writes stories that are effortless to read and he is the master of the twist. Both Win and The Match are great. (The Match releases in March ‘22) John Sandford teamed up Lucas and Virgil for a great story. Whitaker and Cosby gave us great crime fiction characters. The Bounty is another great addition to the O’hare/Fox series. And my top thriller this year is A Caller’s Game by JD Barker. This is one of the most wildly entertaining books you might ever read. He literally takes your breath away and the ending is 🤯. The Sixth Wicked Child by JD Barker is the final book in his 4MK trilogy. All of our questions are answered. What is Det. Sam Porter’s connection to the 4MK killer? What is the connection between all of the victims? What is lurking in Charleston, SC? Who is the real 4MK killer? With this last book, Barker takes the reader on a wild, intense ride. It’s almost impossible to catch your breath. Just when you think you have it figured out, he yanks you in another direction. And the twist at the end (or twists) 😱 Maybe you’ll see it coming - l didn’t 😮 This is a trilogy that needs to be read in order. But set aside some time when you start because you’ll want to read them all. If you’re a thriller/crime fiction fan this is a must read. The Fifth to Die is book 2 in the 4MK trilogy from JD Barker. “A girl who had been reported missing is found buried in the ice of a frozen pond wearing the clothes of another missing girl. Porter believes it is someone other than Anson Bishop, the 4MK killer. He is suspended and heads to New Orleans following a clue left by Bishop. There he finds what he hopes will yet him to Bishop.” It’s been a while since I finished Fourth Monkey so it took some pages to get caught up. Same great writing - short chapters. A bad guy to make you cringe. One big issue for me - I am not a fan of cliffhangers and this book is a big setup for the third book. There is resolution to one storyline - sort of. Lots of raving fans to this series.
