I was listening to @extraneousdominomask and @inspector-montoya-fox chat about Sly 2, and both of them expressed confusion over what Jean Bison’s archetype was— so now I’m wondering if “the folksy Lumberjack who tames the north” isn’t actually a well-known character archetype, outside of specific regions in the USA/Canada? Because I grew up with this type of character! XD It’s USAmerican Lumberjack folklore, which is just the northern version of Cowboy Folklore.

Like, do people outside the USA/Canada know Paul Bunyan? I feel like everybody here knows Paul Bunyan. Most novelty tourist attractions in certain regions of America will be themed around folkloric lumberjacks just like this character. (If your tourist town doesn’t have the desert for Cowboy-themed Attractions, then it has the forest for Lumberjack-themed Attractions.) Some members of my family even have a tradition of visiting a specific Paul-Bunyan themed restaurant every year. Jean Bison is literally just Evil Paul Bunyan.

I’m starting to realize that this archetype might be a Uniquely Regional UsAmerican/Canadian Thing that hasn’t broken into global pop culture the way cowboys have, and other people might be “WTF” about it. Powerful.
