Someone help... I'm obsessed with the Newsies... 😭❤️
Newsies AU where...
Everything is the same but the Newsies and Working Kids of New York make Spot Conlon "jokes" the same way we've made Chuck Norris Jokes and Shaggy Memes
Racetrack Family Headcannons
- Race is super close to his grandmother, who is basically Sophia from Golden Girls. She was the only one of his biological family members who consistently showed up for him, be it dance recitals, science fairs, performances, graduations. No matter how big, or small, the event was, she was there. She’s the only person in his biological family that was ever allowed unsupervised visitation and she had no limits on how often she could see him. When she later developed Alzheimer, she still knew who he was. She may not have remembered his name or how she new him, but she knew him. When she passed, Race didn’t leave his room for several days, not even Spot or Jack could get him out.
- Race was handed over to Denton by child services when he was barely a year old, his parents having been arrested in an FBI raid on charges related to organized crime. His grandmother was almost immediately cleared, having been clearly separated from her husband since her son was born, spending her time stage and staying with friends, leaving her husband to raise their son, and then later her own apartment in Manhattan. Denton was the one to reach out to her, talk to her, and bring in a lawyer to put together the visitation rules.
- Racer is the youngest of the three boys Denton raised. Jack and Crutchie had arrived together and were both two years older than Racer, who was given his nickname by Jack when the blonde toddler completely skipped walking and when right to running. Racer may be the youngest but he is, by leaps and bounds, the most mature of his brothers.
- Racer. Is. Smart. I refuse to believe that he’s dumb. He doesn’t broadcast his intelligence. He spend his entire student career secretly at the top of his class. He has his picks of schools and Denton has had an “Ivy Fund” set up for him since he was in first grade and Denton found him reading “War and Peace” and understanding what was written. When Jack and Crutchie got older, they started contributing to it as well, despite Denton telling them they didn’t need to. Jack always joked that Racer was going to be the one to support him so that Jack could live his dream of being a starving artist.
- Jack and Crutchie adore their little brother. He is their favorite person. They helped Denton through all the ups and downs of baby Racer, who was terrified of loud noises. He continued to be easily startled by loud noises, Jack thinks it due to experiencing the trauma of an FBI raid on top of whatever he experienced with his parents. He made not have the memories of it, but that kind of thing would leave a lasting impression on him. Jack has always been extremely protective of Racer. And, while Crutchie is as well, he always knows that jumping to overreaction is not the way to go. While Jack doesn’t want to allow Racer to really grow up, Crutchie knows that Racer will do what he wants to, regardless of whether or not he has Jack’s approval.
- The most dramatic part of his coming out to is foster family was the fact that Jack had caught him making out with Spot Conlon and had almost lost his head. Denton had sighed and resigned himself to Racer being pissed at Jack, something that just got uglier as time went on. Jack’s only complaint being that he didn’t like Spot, something Denton refused to have an opinion on until he met the boy (his resolve wavered only slightly when Jack mentioned the boy being two years older than Racer, but harden again when he saw his youngest, his fearless, kid look worried that Denton would side with Jack).
- Racer’s biological family was something else entirely. On one of his bi-monthly visits to Rickers to see his mother, father, and grandfather, he told them that he was gay. Denton immediately got him out of there as his family started spitting hate, shouting slurs, and loudly disowning him as the door closed. Racer was silent the entire walk out and journey home. He finally broke when they got home, throwing his arms around Denton, crying and thanking him for being his dad. It broke Denton’s heart to see Racer’s armor crack. Jack and Crutchie were both so free with their emotions, but Racer had build a wall on a solid foundation, a wall that never wavered unless a force greater than Racer’s sheer will caused the foundation to crack.
- After the mess that was telling his parents and grandfather he was gay, he was terrified of telling his grandmother. When he decided he was going to do it, he steeled himself and refused to mention it to Jack, Crutchie, or Denton. He just zipped up his coat and got on the subway. For the first time in his life, he knocked on her door, rather than just walking in, unsure of if his incarcerated family members had told her already. She ushered him in and sat him down at the table, knowing her grandson well enough to know he needed to get something off his chest. He ended up just blurting it out. She processed it for a moment, nodded, and told him to get up so they could start making a couple of meals for him to take home, after all Denton was on a deadline at work and Jack and Crutchie were useless in the kitchen. While they cooked, she asked if he had a boyfriend and what kind of name Spot was for a human being. As the afternoon wore on, he felt the weight lift off his shoulders.
This is so stupid and I love it.
random doodling > actual requests and projects
