Even an oil painting slowly changes: colors fade, paint dries and develops cracks, the canvas embrittles or shrinks or warps. I like to experiment with time in a more immediate sense. I take static photographs — which are captured moments in time from a specific perspective — and stretch them into the fourth dimension. In essence, I use microcontrollers and code in a series of abstractions to turn space INTO time. Conceptually, this re-animates that captured moment-perspective, but in a highly abstracted way." #Repost @semisequential ・・・ Yeah… I almost made this ANOTHER multiple comic showcasing (X-Ray Robot was fantastic, as was the return of Die! Die! Die! And Bitter Root, oh and Wicked Thin… okay I’ll stop) BUT I decided to exact some discipline and go with a single title for today’s Honorable Mention Monday and to nobody’s surprise I went with Tartarus issue 2. This title’s remarkable premiere was a Sunday Select last month, and I was floored to see it keeps pace with its second issue. While this issue shrinks down in scale a bit, it wastes no time throwing us into well paced action adventure while still delivering bold, beautiful world building. I’ve seen Tartarus compared to Frank Herber’s Dune with it’s  magnitude of colorful characters, settings, and a sci-fi world begging to get lost in, I think the comparison is apt. I could live in every panel of Jack T. Cole’s work. There’s an exquisite amount of detail without being overwhelming or distracting. I love the built-in psychedelia to the technology and world, providing the creators to showcase some unique and surreal sequential art. There is something special about this book that I can’t quite verbalize, but I know that it’ll be in my top 5 favorite comics of 2020 just from these first two issues alone. Great work all around, and 100% worth your time and money. Speaking of money, I’m not certain there will be a NCBD post this week with my layoff but I’ll definitely sling some content this way when I can. Percussion alumni return to campus for collaborative concert

The University of Kentucky Percussion Group (UKPG) will perform a free public concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall. The concert will feature members of the current Percussion Studio as well as five distinguished alumni who are returning to campus to perform alongside them.

Kyle Forsthoff is currently the artist/teacher of percussion at the University of Rhode Island and is an instructor at The Rhody Center for World Music and Dance. Previously, he has held positions at Rhode Island College, UK, Morehead State University and Capital University. Forsthoff is an active scholar and performer of Irish traditional music and other frame drum traditions, and has performed and taught throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Forsthoff will perform “Karagadamu” for Irish bodhrán soloist and percussion trio. The word “karagadamu” comes from the South Indian dialect of Telugu, and means among other things “fusion.” This piece is exactly that, a fusion of the Irish bodhrán with the musical traditions of South India, specifically konnakol.

Founded in 2015, blueSHIFT Percussion is dedicated to the performance of modern works for percussion and engaging new audiences with thrilling performances. In astronomy, a “blueshift” is defined as a shift towards shorter wavelengths of the spectral lines of a celestial object, tracking the movement from the object as it grows ever closer to the observer. Inspired by the audible physics of percussion, the mission of blueSHIFT is to connect with audiences through chamber percussion music and to create authentic relationships with percussion composers.

In a more literal sense, blueSHIFT is an homage to the UK percussion program, where all members have been doctoral students under the direction of Professor James Campbell. The ensemble includes alumni Matthew Geiger (East Tennessee State University), Chris Butler (Southern Illinois University), Francisco Perez (Lamar University) and Jeremy Maytum (University of Maryland). They will perform a new work alone as well as a collaborative work with the current Percussion Studio.
