That aside, I was just reading Wikipedia, as one does, and the acronym here hit me like a wet sock.

Like, do you think she knew?

When she wrote Hermione's arc as an overbearing self-righteous SJW ignoring the wants and desires of the people she advocated for, who... you know, do tons of unpaid domestic labour without even legal personhood, who she thought should be given proper wages and the right to leave abusive households...

I realize this is a really dumb point here. Obviously her "feminism" was never strong enough to overcome a lot of basic misogyny at any point, but it's long since stopped being a tissue-thin veil over her transphobia. It wouldn't actually matter to any of the other "feminists" she hangs around with if she had at one point had reason to know better than to make her bad point about misguided student activism so closely parallel the argument that women just LIKE being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen all day and feminism was a mistake to begin with.

Nor would it make my opinion of her any lower, frankly. Clearly she's still a bigoted celebrity crybully who thinks only women like her should get to throw punches.

But I'm still agog? Surely she didn't know and just went for a silly pun. Back then she still thought she was a liberal. She couldn't have.

I’m not against criticizing the Harry Potter books in 2025–not in a “you’re just giving her more attention” way and certainly not in a “the books are above criticism” way—but the people who bother are generally not good at it. It’s very tumblr-callout-post-style, where everything is given equal emphasis: obviously offensive stereotypes, nebulous mean-spiritedness, obscurely problematic tropes, middle-of-the-road feminism circa 1999, casual sexism circa 1999, storylines where JKR was trying to do something complicated and it turned out weird, storylines where she was trying to do something complicated and it turned out fine but the person making the critique is dense, heteronormativity, some fandom grievance left over from when the person who made the critique loved the series but was pissed off that Sirius/Remus wasn’t canon, etc. And it’s like okay I know you don’t want to say anything nice about such a disgusting person, but I don’t think Professor Sprout’s lack of character development is really about sexism, let alone JKR’s current prominence in a transphobic hate movement.

I know this has probably already been talked about because the book cover was in one of the promo images that came out a few days ago, but god I love RTD & Co throwing shade at JKR and setting up a parallel with the jarring disconnect/gap between Conrad's ideology and the story he's reading.

For sure jkr is transphobic, but to say she hates trans women feels inaccurate to me, because it's not just trans women that she hates, it's all women. Look up her inspiration for Umbridge (or just read how she writes women, but this is especially egregious). She hates women, especially feminine women. Yes, it's a different kind of hatred from her hatred for trans women, but I just think it would be more impactful to call her transphobic and misogynistic/women hating, because that's two things that she is, and it paints a clearer picture. Maybe people who don't give a rats ass about trans rights (losers, but unfortunately still losers we want to agree with us) hears that she hates women and sees how clear it is and maybe starts to think critically.

By all means highlight her specific and distinct hatred for trans people, for trans women especially, and for the cruelty and harm she has inflicted on the community, but when we talk about the transphobic terf jkr, maybe we should stop letting her be called a terf. There's not a feminist bone in her body (true of most "terfs" it seems). Let's call her what she is: a transphobic, antisemitic, misogynistic hack.

i feel like neil gaimen characters should be treated how the rpc treat harry potter muses. supporting his creations is putting money in his pockets. his list of accusations was some of the most heinous stuff ive ever read, including the involvement of his minor child. everyone has hp on their dni list, the same should be done for sandman. but rpc is very bias.

writing on a tumblr blog is not the same thing as giving him monetary profit.

and let me point out, that not "everyone" has hp on their dni. and those who do have a very good reason for it. gaiman has done absolutely awful things but he's never donated money publicly to the amount that jkr has to further enhance legislation against marginalized people.

I try not to talk about JK Rowling because honestly I think we should all try really really hard to forget her and stop giving her any more power with our attention but at times it genuinely brings me to tears. I have buried that part of my childhood, they're just books and don't matter to me any more, but it's all just so unnecessarily vile.

And for what? Because she's scared and bought into a fantasy, then blasted that horrid thinking like a disease across several generations in the UK? I never used to believe just one person could do this kind of harm, because the likes of the political leaders are in their position because of existing structures and others in their party. But she really climbed to the top of a mountain with the millions she made on her books, then from that position of influence commanded a war against one of the smallest minorities in this country. That's just evil.
