JK Rowling on Twitter today.
my mom stands with JKR on the recent trans rights debate triggered by her tweets, and I've been debating with her for months on the matter. I've read the essay JKR wrote on it, and the tweets that started it all, plus I've read a lot of people's opinions. are there any other points I can bring up with my mom to help show her what I think about it?
she's particularly against the point about trans people (mainly trans women) being allowed in public bathrooms and changing rooms etc. I hate that we disagree on this, but she keeps pulling out the 'I have more experience being a woman in this world than you because I'm older and therefore my opinion counts for more' card.
we're both cis women, but being part of the LGBTQ+ community myself - and being a decent human being - trans rights are something I feel quite strongly about.
any ideas I can use to combat her opinions, please let me know. thank you!
Okay okay okay
Y’all know the JKR transphobia thing? The newest one? The newest, awful one?
EMMA WATSON JUST SPOKE OUT AGAINST IT.
Dan already did- which is great. Love Dan. Fucking adore him. But Emma-raging-feminist-Watson defended trans people from a TERF. If ANYONE was gonna defend JKR, it was gonna be her. But no. She didn’t. She defended trans people. Her raging feminism includes trans people. EMMA WATSON SAID TRANS RIGHTS, FUCK YEAH!
I know this is unfair of me, but I knew she was a huge feminist- as am I, absolutely nothing wrong with that -but I was scared that would turn into her being a TERF. It didn’t. It fucking didn’t, and shame on me for thinking so. Emma Watson, biggest feminist ever, fucking said trans rights. That should shut JKR up IMMEDIATELY.
BRIGHTEST WITCH OF HER FUCKING AGE
I’m just really happy right now y’all. Emma Watson is here for us. Emma Watson said no to TERFs. The world is so fucking bad but GODAMMIT, IT COULD BE WORSE. Emma Watson has joined the battle and Emma Watson STANDS WITH US after I was so scared she wouldn’t.
It’s a good day
Can we get some trans Harry Potter fics where the Wizarding World gives zero fucks about gender or sexuality just to spite JKR.
So, I just told my Dad about what JKR did and it led to a difficult conversation which had some good results.
First I was surprised that he didn't immediately agree. We never talked about trans and nonbinary people but I just assumed we would be on the same page, because we are with most things. Instead of being mad I decided to listen to him and to share my views and my knowledge I was able to gain through the years by listening to my nonbinary friend and other members of the community.
He thought JKR just expressed an opinion, which wasn't wrong, since it "is just fact that people who menstruate are women."
I explained to him the difference between sex and gender and how they don't just "feel" or "think" like they are the other gender but that they ARE. And that it isn't just made up by our generation and people who want attention but that there are studies that show biological and psychological differences between for example a cis female and a female to male transperson.
Once he understood these, it was way easier to talk about the topic. He asked questions.
And, please, if people are asking questions and you are able to answer them, do so! That's the only way they can lern and expand their knowledge.
He didn't get fully on board with me about nonbinary people BUT it was just a 40 minute conversation. Small progress is progress guys.
It's also important to not bash your conversation partner for every opinon they express. He said that he thinks there are way bigger problems in society which affect way more people than "this relatively small group" which are more important to fight.
And that is a valid opinion, I don't need to agree with it to accept it for the time being.
At the end I just want to say, that this example just shows that we need to have these hard conversations, because they help. Not just about transgender and nonbinary folks. But about injustice and discrimination against Poc.
Luckily I didn't had to have this conversation with my dad because he is and always was anti-racist and fights with us on this.
Keep on fighting. Keep on listening. Keep on using your voice. ♥️
callout post for me (and anyone else who needs a reminder): stop. reading. jk rowling's bullshit. stop it. it's not healthy. talk to a friend if you can. drink some water. be kind to yourself
also terfs can go to hell :)
I don’t think JKR is perfect in any way. But can a trans activist please explain to me how her Tweets were transphobic. She explicitly said that trans people deserve safety and respect. She also said that professionals should not be fired for saying sex is real (especially within the context of sex-based inequality, ie., reproductive rights, male on female r*pes, the trafficking of female people, etc). Saying sex-based discrimination is real and saying trans people deserve love and respect can exist in the same sentence.
JK Rowling needs to deactivate her stupid twitter account I stg 🙄🤦♀️
