Are You Processing Job Rejection Correctly?
Job rejection may be even worse than a breakup. Let’s paint the picture - you are up all night, upload your cover letter and resume, complete the entire job application and press send. This could be your dream job. This could also just be the job you need to make ends meet. Whatever it is - this is the job you want. Days later you receive the email:
Hi (insert name),
Thank you so much for your interest in the position. While we were impressed with your skill set, we have chosen to proceed with another candidate who has more leadership experience.
Again, we appreciate your time, and we wish you the best of luck in your career endeavors.
All you can think is WHAT IN THE HELL?!!! We’ve all been here and we all know this feeling. This sucks. You not only feel like you didn’t get a chance to prove yourself but you also don’t understand why they decided to say no. Oh let’s not forget to mention the interview you actually go to. You go to work early to print your resume out without anyone knowing, you lie to your boss to get a longer lunch hour, you go all the way to the offices and they say no. Again, WHAT IN THE HELL?!?!
With the new state of the world some of us will be getting a lot of job rejections. Here are some tips to get through the next job breakup.
WHAT IS MEANT TO BE WILL BE
This is a very true statement. While in the moment it seems like the world may be ending & things will not work out - they will. Life has a funny way of doing things. If you did not get the job - you were not meant to be in that building.
DON’T LIVE IN THE MOMENT
Don’t beat yourself up about something you have no control over. Read the email, respond with a thank you and move on. Just like people say there are many fish in the sea - there are also many jobs in the world. The right job will come along.
DON’T TAKE IT PERSONAL
These people do not know you. While you put your best foot forward, answered everything to the best of your abilities and put on your A+ smile it is not personal that they did not pick you. Sometimes you have to stuck things up to the game. Don’t let a job depict who you are. You are great with or without this company. Remember that!
MOVE ALONG
“When all you got to keep is strong - Move along, move along like I know you do” - All American Rejects
Just like every breakup - give yourself some time to grieve. I say one day but do whatever makes you feel the best. Once you are done, get back out to the program and continue to apply to other places. While this job didn’t work out there are other jobs that will. Use this as motivation to get a bigger & better job. The right job is out there for you - you just have to stay consistent and keep going.
