What if the writers didn't intended for S3 to be overlain with Johnlock text/subtext? What if it is like one writer (or someone) said, and they were having Sherlock explore his emotions and try as hard as possible to make things up to John, and WE are just seeing what we want to see? :runs away sobbing:

Who cares?

You can always read any text however you want. This text in particular is very, very easily read as the great big giant burning love story between Sherlock Holmes and his blogger, John Watson. It uses all the tropes of a romance story. The phrases used by minor characters about their love lives (“I’ve moved on!” “It wasn’t working for me,”) are uttered again by John about/to Sherlock. He wakes up in the morning clutching his crotch and dreaming about Sherlock. He is always, always jealous of anyone he thinks Sherlock might be interested in. Sherlock brought himself back to life because John might be in trouble. Sherlock knowingly throws his life away to protect John’s new life. You can go on and on and on. There is nothing crazy about reading a romantic attraction between these two. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s absolutely, iron-clad plausible! And that’s the highest rating I can give anything!

The intentions of the creators of said text don’t actually matter in the end. The only way it matters to us now is whether or not the intention of the writers is to continue in this vein of glorious subtext or not. If we were completely misreading the subtext, then a following series might turn out to be disappointing, I suppose.

But if series three subtext is what they create by accident, intending to demonstrate friendship, well then I think we’ll be fine. Because this is the most famous friendship in the history of English literature, so you can rest assured that their friendship will remain the core of this show. And if this passionate devotion, this romantic pining and barely concealed desire, is what they think friendship looks like, well, cool! Have at, boys! *chinhands* Do go on!
