THE DOUBLE
GENRES: Historical, Drama, Action
SUMMARY: Everyone deserves what’s coming to them after they try to bury you alive to appease a stubborn Eldest Princess.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Grisly murder, jade flutes, hair pin identification, dumb uncles, battle fans, turtles, penis stabbings, shitty step mothers and sisters, magical guqin performances, inverted archery, poisons for good and for evil, legacy rabbit medallions, childhood toys, secret gold mines, and scheming Emperors.
HOT TAKE: I enjoyed this show for more reasons that I can list. Was it Flourished Peony-level good? Not quite, but almost. You gotta give it to a show that cold-opens with a staged affair, a home imprisonment, and a live burial amongst the apricot blossoms.
The writers made the villain Princess both ruthlessly detestable and yet pitiful, they wrote her boytoy to be suitably scared and egotistical, our main character was strong, determined, and clever, and her love interest had an excellent balance of childhood sadness, rich power, and cunty little smile that made every interaction a delightful tsunami of flirtation.
People who you didn't think knew secrets had been carrying the truth with them for years--people who you thought knew everything only had a small piece of the puzzle.
Oh, and it was a nice change of pace to see so many male characters with their hair down. I know this is normal for the more fantasy-focused CDramas, but so far this is one of the first 'normal' historical CDramas I've seen where we get to see a guy just eschew the top knot while he's being relaxed at home.
I slept on this show when it was first released because I had not yet embraced how delightful CDramas can be. This is a must-watch no matter if it's your first drama or your 10th.

OMG I peeked at the end of Our Times and he did turn into Domyoji.
OMG.
(I loved Jerry Yan as Daoming Si SFM. Meteor Garden 2001 was my second ever drama and proof that Mars was not a fluke and I was gonna love these things. In a lot of ways, it’s still my favorite adaptation, even with no budget. SO GOOOOOD!!! I kind of want a rewatch. And unlike any other version other than the jdrama, they didn’t tone him down, thankfully, but let him do full psycho. Anyway, digression.)
