The Incredibles was released on 5 November 2004.

Brad Bird began thinking about making a movie about spies and superheroes as early as 1993, and after his first feature, The Iron Giant (1999) was a box office disappointment, Bird reconnected with college friend John Lassiter at Pixar and pitched him the idea. Lassiter gave Bird a multi-picture deal and The Incredibles would be Bird's first film with the studio.

The Incredibles was a commercial and critical success, becoming the 4th highest-grossing film of 2004 and receiving 4 Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing. It received the Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Sound Editing.

Disney/Pixar is releasing its next animated film “Soul” on Disney+ on 12/25/2020. It was originally intended for a movie theater release in June 2020 but due to Covid19 is was delayed and rescheduled multiple times.

From the title, lead character (Voiced by Jamie Fox) and focusing on Jazz Music, the story clearly focuses on African American themes.

That’s why I’m surprised that, although the voice actors are nearly all Black, the creative time behind the movie is nearly all white. The film is directed by Pete Docter and produced by Dana Murray. Doctor wrote the script with Mike Jones and Kemp Powers with additional dialogue by Tina Fey. So of those 5 people, only one is Black. And although Jon Batiste is writing Jazz songs for the film, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing the rest of the music.

Maybe the film will be great. Maybe it will tell a meaningful story about African Americans. I realize “Soul” has been in production well before the BLM effort but the production seems tone deaf - Rich White People trying to tell a story about African American Jazz.

I see that Disney getting rid of John Lassiter hasn’t “woke” Pixar very much.

Pixar’s “Soul”

I was talking about Pixar films with a friend. I skipped “Onward” because the story and cast didn’t interest me. So I was curious what their next effort was...

... it’s called “Soul” about an African American jazz musician (voiced by Jamie Foxx) whose soul gets separated from his body. He has to figure out how to become whole again. The title, jazz music, and ethnicity of the main character suggests a story rooted in Black Culture (most of the cast listed on Wikipedia are also Black actors).

But I was surprised to see that nearly the entire creative staff was white - white directed & producer and 3 of 4 white screen writers. And although Jon Batiste is writing Jazz songs for the film, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are composing the rest of the music.

I realize this has been in production well before the current strife, but the production seems so tone deaf - Rich White People trying to tell a story about African American Jazz.

I see that getting rid of John Lassiter hasn’t “woke” Pixar very much.
