Gunn-Truscinski Duo — Flam (Three Lobed)
With their fifth collaborative effort, Steve Gunn and John Truscinski have significantly expanded their shared universe, experimenting with both their approach and their sound-making arsenal. Their previous effort, the double album Soundkeeper, was a focused expression of earthy sonic ecstasy, the title track hinting toward the vast expanse of sky above. Flam expands on that piece’s cosmic notions, exhibiting a spaciousness that reveals the duo’s penchant for exploring new realms of sound. From the mesmerizing clockwork tick-tocks of “Broad Street Bells” to the shimmering reverberations of “For Ika,” it’s clear that Gunn and Truscinski are playing with sonic language. They’ve mixed in a new, ambient-leaning phonology and syntax, but retained their unique sense of musical semantics.
