Gee whizz if only there was already an animated film about a cat entering an unfamiliar environment that uses a hand-painted art style!

This film is looking to be Pixar's most obvious attempt to rip off another movie to date.

I just saw the trailer for this and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills watching how many people are gushing about how this is going to be Pixar's best movie in a decade.

"Oh but they're finally doing animation with a hand painted look and changing up their style!"

Changing your style to copy the thing like half a dozen other studios have already been doing and getting praised for is not innovation, it is trend chasing. That isn't a guarantee that it won't be good, but combined with the choice of protagonists which seems to be riding the coattails of Puss In Boots and Flow, it smells like an idea generated by executives grasping at straws. I do not have high hopes for the actual story to not be a pretty generic talking-animal comedy. Like, this could just be like Secret Life Of Pets with a "painted" artstyle.

Also "The guy who directed Luca makes a movie about cats who are in the Mafia, and it is set in Venice, and the protagonist is adopted by a street artist." Those words in that combination are not inspiring any confidence here. This is going to be "What If Stereotypical Italians had feelings 2: Electric Boogaloo" except some of the stereotypical Italians will happen to be cats. Mark my words.

Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THAT’S what causes consumption, they’d be like “ah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guests”

But if you told a Medieval person this they would probably go "Ah, so when the miasma settles on surfaces it gains evil life. I understand."

Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.

boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.

what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away. how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.

and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.

what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.

Every time I hit a video or science book pooh-poohing the miasma theory, I want to scream. Okay, so it wasn't the smell that was transmitting disease, but they had figured out that disease could spread by air as well as physical contact, and that social distancing and masking might help.

To be fair, by the regency era scientists had discovered the existence of microorganisms and observed mold spores with microscopes, and there were people proposing that "Animalcules" were linked to diseases, it just took several more decades for these hypotheses to be proven and become widely accepted. It was a fringe hypothesis at that point but one that existed. I guess it would be kind of like time traveling back to the early 80s and going "Hey, you know that theory about the K/T boundary being caused by an asteroid impact? Well, we found the crater." But the medical equivalent.

And the major issue with miasma theory wasn't believing that disease could be transmitted through the air, it was dismissing other mechanisms of transmission as primitive superstition, and when miasma theorists misattributed diseases like cholera or typhoid to bad air instead of contaminated water supplies, it got people killed because of officials ignoring the actual causes. Which to be fair was not inherently a problem with miasma theory if people had been willing to consider the invisible "miasmata" also being able to travel through drinking water or be carried on the skin.

I suspect its modern reputation as a dangerous superstition instead of an important precursor to germ theory is because the development of modern germ theory roughly coincided with horrific numbers of people dying from things like waterborne diseases (e.g. there was a cholera pandemic in the middle of the 19th century) and surgical infections where Miasma Theory failed at telling people effective ways to prevent them, and the people who were finding solutions that worked, even without germ theory, kept having to fight people over things like washing surgical tools between patients, or doctors washing their hands before touching living patients with them after dissecting corpses, or "Raw sewage in the river / ground water that the city's water supply comes from is directly spreading disease."

Like, this isn't like people not accepting continental drift when there wasn't a mechanism that explained it, or people being skeptical of geocentrism until stellar parallax was actually measured; it was possible to empirically identify ways disease spread without knowing the exact cause in the same way Mendel was able to come up with fairly accurate theories about inheritance without anyone knowing about DNA, but a one-size-fits all theory is not that.

What if you wanted to make a calendar for your Pathfinder world but your dumb ass said "You know what would be cool? Putting it at a trojan point of a gas giant so there's a celestial body that only ever appears in the evening" and then-

(x axis = time in earth years. Y axis = the planet's orbital period in days)

The length of the year is changing by about 2-1/2 days and it's oscillating at TWO DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES one of which is about 15.555x the average length of the year and the other is 116.867x the average length of the year. The year which is, on average, 361-13/17ths days long.

Okay so 13 leap years every 17 years is theoretically accurate to almost 1 day of drift in 2000 years from the average orbital period. Except if you actually try to make a calendar like that the solstices / equinoxes will actually be off by several DAYS most of the time. I don't think there is any not absurdly complicated rule for leap days that will work here.

I mean I guess if I fudge the periods to about 15-5/11ths years and 116-7/8ths years, then an 1870 year cycle would fit together but be a total clusterfuck and OH MY GOD THE ARGUMENT OF PERIAPSE IS JUST DOING WHATEVER IT WANTS JESUS CHRIST

Okay so the precession of the equinoxes is also all over the goddamn place. Oh and the orbital eccentricity varies from near-zero to usually >0.07 on a 480 year cycle (high end varies over geologic time)

Yeah I think this is legitimately impossible to make a working calendar for.

i know part of the reason she had to die is that a) farai wouldn't get to shine in that extraction from the apartment, b) most of their questions and concerns about the torus would have been EASILY answered, c) murderbot's job would have been like... way too easy, in a book that's already very light on open combat, but consider:

if she was (with good reason) even more concerned than murderbot about being found out, if she had been critically injured and often unconscious or confused and thus unable to help, if her injuries slowed the group's progress a lot more than naja's age or the children's bladders ever could, if her dead body had not confused B-E's pursuit and instead its absence had made the task force much faster and more dogged,

Even if she wasn't physically a liability her presence would have made the family road trip from hell even more annoying for MB, and she deserved to be subjected to Murderbot for an entire book. Just imagine her being there for the other rogue secunit showing up, or attempting to negotiate with the rich kid sky pirates while MB is trying to get her off the comm so it can do its job. Also she might not even know much about the Torus outside of Barish-Estranza's turf, and her attempting to Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss her way through every situation while not actually being very helpful would be good comedy.

And also, like, we've had seven books of Murderbot protecting, you know... PresAux, who accepts Murderbot's personhood more easily than Murderbot accepts Murderbot's personhood. Naive Science Polycule, who think it's human. Don Abene and co, who are friends with a bot. PresAux humans again. Mensah's family and also ART and ART's humans. PresAux humans + ART's humans. PresAux Security + some refugees it barely talks to. Murderbot having to deal with a human who is completely steeped in all the Corporation Rim propaganda about constructs would be an interesting change of pace. Plus Leonide being forced to confront her biases by virtue of being stuck dependent on a rogue secunit for survival, even if Murderbot has no interest at all in wasting its time educating her and just wants her to shut the fuck up.

And then ART gets sucked into participating in the inane conversation within seconds.
