Norm Macdonald didn't like roasts. He wasn't a fan of the format, and didn't want to make fun of a friend. But Bob insisted, and Norm warned him.... he didn't want to say anything mean, he'd just be doing jokes from an old jokebook his father gave him when he was starting out (Jokes to tell at a retirement party). Bob said that would be fine, because if Norm was telling the jokes, they'd be funny. Also, a producer called and told him to be SHOCKING. What he did was shocking, make no mistake. People thought Norm had dementia because of this set. Ridiculous!
Also of note, Bob's and Norm's friend Artie Lange was absent from the roast, and knowing Hollywood, they thought he may have died and no one would tell them, because of how Shows Must Go On, and deaths can really damper the mood. So, you know, stuff like that doesn't engender a killer instinct roasting in a man like Norm, who by all accounts was a good person who did right be people, and had only love in his heart for his fellow eternal souls.
God bless him.
