What’s New This Week? 10/3
First week of October, and the picks this week are scary good!
Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion #1 - Gerard Way, Gabriel Ba and Nick Filardi
After nearly a decade, Gerard Way is heading back to the Umbrella Academy with a brand new story! Sir Reginald Hargreeves is dead, and his “children” have been split up. Number Five is a hired gun, Kraken is stalking big game, Rumor is dealing with the wreckage of her marriage, Spaceboy runs around the streets of Tokyo, Vanya continues her physical therapy after being shot in the head-and no one wants to even mention Seance.
Blackbird #1 - Sam Humphries and Jen Bartel
Nina Rodriguez is positive that a secret magic world ruled by ruthless cabals is hiding just beneath Los Angeles. The problem: everyone thinks she's crazy. The bigger problem: she's not crazy - she's right. Can she unravel the mystery before the Great Beast catches up with her?
Rainbow Brite #1 - Jeremy Whitley and Brittney Williams
Kids of the 80s, rejoice! Fantom friend Jeremy Whitley is bringing the technicolor heroine of your youth back and answering the question on everyone’s mind: How the heck did a little girl become a superhero?
X-Men Black: Magneto #1 - Chris Claremont and Dalibor Talajic
For years, Magneto has done everything he can to achieve his goals for mutant domination, but now he’s declared that enough is enough. What revolutionary plan does Magneto have that will change the face of mutantkind? And will anyone be able to stop him? Will anyone want to?
Jook Joint #1 (of 5) - Tee Franklin and Alitha Martinez
Mahalia runs the hottest spot in all of 1950s New Orleans. The Jook Joint keeps the jazz popping, people bopping... and the women? The women are to die for. There's only one rule: "Keep your hands to yourself." But some men think rules don't apply to them, and Mahalia and her coven of slain women enjoy reminding them that they most certainly do.
Whatcha getting this week, Fantomites?
A few of my research notes on Zora Neale Hurston’s, Harlem Slanguage, also appearing as the appendix to, Story in Harlem Slang, published in 1942 by American Mercury.
Hurston’s papers & portraits by
Carl Van Vechten were pulled from the @BeineckeLibrary digital collection.

MARTINEZ (Black Panther: World of Wakanda) team up for a timely horror series from the Deep South! Mahalia runs the hottest spot in all of 1950s New Orleans. The Jook Joint keeps the jazz popping, people bopping… and the women? The women are to die for. There’s only one rule: “Keep your hands to yourself.” But some men think rules don’t apply to them, and Mahalia and her coven of slain women enjoy reminding them that they most certainly do.
Jook Joint #2 - Image Comics
By Tee Franklin & Alitha Martinez
I really need to order issue #3 of this series, and the remaining ones! Fortunately this is a short story, 5 issues total.
I want to know where this series goes. Does it end in redemption? Freedom through revenge? Guilt? Our heroine wants to stop violence. Will she be able to? Even though she’s using violence?
This is Franklin’s attempt at recovery; a creative outlet for her to discuss her pain and recovery. At the end of this day, this narrative is great. It’s compelling, and relatable, but not an easy read. I recommend this story to anybody who has experienced trauma, and also recovering. Again, this is not an easy read, but I think a necessary story for Tee Franklin to write and share.
We’re back!
