Tom Welling and Josh Pence Talk Draft Day with Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub for Collider.com in Los Angeles, California on March 30th, 2014!:
Special Thanks To @Shelby_Huesario for the name of the man interviewing Tom.
Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub: So, I'll just start by saying, do you guys go online a lot?
Tom Shakes His Head: No!
Steve: No? He's like, no! [laughs]
Josh Looking At Tom: I've been on this Earth for the Internet from time to time.
Tom: Are you talking like social media? Or, just,
Steve: No, just in general.
Tom: In general?
Steve: Like, are you an online junkie? Or, not at all?
Tom: [thinking] I'm probably on line more than I think I am, but you know, I'm not like, yeah.
Josh: I'm on line right now.
Tom Laughs!
Steve Laughs!
Steve: We're also doing Transcendents today.
Josh: Oh, yeah. That's good. I'm feeling transcendent.
Steve: I'm just joking around.
Tom's still laughing!
Josh: Yeah. I have a love-hate relationship with the Internet. It's sort of one of those things that we need now. It's so integrated into our lives. And, at the same time, I just want to unplug it all the time.
Steve: I'm super happy that every day more and more people get addicted cause it's how I pay my rent, so that's.
Tom: There you go.
Josh: I'll spread the word. Yeah.
Steve: Yeah. It's not just a fad. You jump into wagons to talk to you guys today. Um, Kevin Costner's sports movie when you think about that term. I mean, he's made such iconic films. He's so great, and he's just Kevin Costner.
Tom: Mmhmmm.
Steve: When they presented you with the role, or talked to you about the role was this like, 'oh, I'm in!'
Josh: Oh, yeah!
Josh looks at Tom. Tom Nods!
Josh: I was fighting for the role. I mean, it wasn't like, 'here it is. Do you want it, or not? I was like, let me think about this. I mean then I read the script and I thought it was fantastic, and to work with Ivan to work with Kevin. It's all. It's a crazy cast! It was, I was fighting tooth and nail for it.
Tom: Yeah. It was a great script. But, I, I was told that Kevin was going to do it, and Ivan was going to direct it just before I read it. So, as I'm reading it, I'm picturing Kevin, and so it all just became even better.
Steve: I'm definitely curious. Ivan's directed such classic movies, I love the guy.
Josh: Mmhmmm.
Tom Nodding!
Steve: I mean, I'm sure both of you feel the same way.
Tom: Mmhmmm.
Steve: What was he like to work with? Um, especially, giving his amazing resume?
Josh looks at Tom!
Tom: It was great. He's just such a pro, and he's honest. And, he just creates an environment where you really feel safe to explore. You don't, you don't have to watch yourself because you know he's keeping an eye on you in the best sense.
Josh: Yeah! He's old school! And, I, he didn't really coddle you. He's just very blunt. He's very honest, so if you don't have a great take, you'll know. If you have a great take, you do know it. So, that's nice cause you, I trust him, which is a very important thing cause the director is the coach, the GM.
Steve: One of the things that is really cool about this movie is that it has real NFL teams. It's not some fake universe and whatever. Um, obviously, you prepare for a role and you do some research. Was there one or two things that you both learned that really surprised you about the NFL or about the way, the character type you played?
Tom: Ah, they do a drug test after Spring Training. During the season, they do a drug test.
Josh: Who told you that?
Tom: One of the players.
Josh: No names?
Tom: No names!
Steve And Josh Laugh!
Tom: And, each quarterback travels with fifteen custom broken end balls just for them!
Steve: Is that true!?
Josh: That's really cool! Yeah!
Tom: Yeah!
Steve: I didn't know that.
Josh: I didn't either.
Tom: You believe the second one but not the first one? I, did I sell the second one better?
Josh: I had just heard the second one...
Tom: True or false? [Moving his hands up and down!]
Josh Finishes: Before, so I knew.
Tom: Oh!
Steve: Well, I just figured. That's an interesting thing about the drug testing and ah, it probably makes sense, but I had not heard that.
Josh: Yeah.
Tom: Maybe we should go on line.
Steve Laughs!
Tom: And, search for it.
Steve: I don't know where we could get that information, though. If only there was a site that organized that.
Josh: Yeah.
Tom: No wonder! [LAUGHS]
They ALL LAUGH!
Steve: I gotta go. I all ready gotta wrap it up, but was there any deleted scenes that didn't make the final cut that ah, you know, that you were sad to see go.
Tom: There was one take that I know wasn't used where Kevin just before his last line, when he says to my character, you know, like, 'come on, man', like, 'grow up' basically, and you know. And, he, you know, walking away, he just kind of gave me a little shot in the stomach, like 'come on, man,' and it surprised me. And, it didn't make it in, that take didn't make it in, but it was, it was kind of a cool experience like when, just getting punched by Kevin Costner!
Steve Laughs!
Josh: Cause you cried at the end, is that why they cut it?
Tom: It, I, yeah, [touching his stomach], it didn't, [shrugs] yeah.
Josh: It didn't! Yeah. I'm sorry. I don't want blow you up about that. It's awkward.
Tom Laughs!
Steve: You should make sure all the...
Josh: I think all the footage. I wish the more of the stuff that I did at the Draft, which I thought was really neat. And, it was all MOS in the final, you know, without sound in the final movie, but that was pretty exciting stuff. I would love to see that footage.
Steve: Cool. Thank you both so much!
Josh: Thank you so much.
Steve: Glad to...
Special Note: If anyone is interested, Josh Pence just used a term: "MOS". It means 'Most Definitely'. Very Special Thanks To @KalElville for this information.
Tom Welling and Josh Pence Interview: "What Women Will Love About Draft Day" with Liz Hernandez of Access Hollywood in Los Angeles, California on March 29th, 2014!:
Special Thanks To @Shelby_Huesario with finding the name of the woman who interview Mr. Tom Welling.
Liz Hernandez: Let's talk about Draft Day.
Tom Welling and Josh Pence are all ready laughing.
Liz: How will this movie pretain to women? Why will women enjoy this film?
Tom: Women are going to enjoy this film cause Kevin Costner's in it.
Josh: Mmhmmm.
Liz Laughs!
Tom: That's pretty simple.
Josh: And, I think they'll enjoy this film cause Jennifer Garner's awesome.
Liz: Yeah.
Tom: Yeah.
Liz: She really is.
Josh: She's fantastic. She's the heartbeat of this movie to me.
Tom Nods!
Josh: Yeah.
Liz: I will say, you know, I am a football fan. And. what I loved about it is I didn't know how Draft Day worked. And, it was really interesting and fun to see the inside of how stressful and how ah just manipulative.
Tom: Mmhmmm.
Liz: You know, these coaches can be.
Josh: Mmhmmm.
Liz: What was it like for you guys just you know working along side Kevin Costner and just being a part of this film?
Tom: Well, one of the things that I realized. I didn't know much about the Draft. Um, to be honest. But, I did learn how, I have a better appreciation for how much of a game changer it is for these guys and the teams. I mean, in that moment. Um, who they get chosen by? How the team dy, team dynamics can change? Um, I thought it was really interesting.
Liz: What about you Josh?
Josh: Yeah. It was definitely an education. I think.
Liz: Yeah.
Josh: You realize that this, these guys have been working so hard for this one moment. And, it's incredible to see hopes and dreams sort of either up lifted or dashed in [snaps fingers] a moment. I mean, it's incredible. It's really. There aren't a lot of things like it for most people in life.
Liz: Right.
Tom: I, I also didn't know the financial gain of being chosen sooner.
Josh: Yeah. That's, it's crazy! Yeah.
Tom Nodding: Like, millions of dollars difference between getting chosen number one and number two.
Josh: Yeah.
Liz: Right.
Tom: I didn't realize.
Josh: Just in the first round.
Tom: Yeah.
Josh: It's crazy. Yeah. It really is. To fall from number one to number ten could mean the difference between, I don't know.
Tom: Millions of dollars.
Josh: Ten, fifteen, a year and two or something like that. It's,...
Liz: Right. You're definitely on this like emotional roller coaster as you like go through the film.
Josh: Yeah.
Liz: And, seeing your character too, how was it working alongside Diddy?
Tom Smiles!
Josh: It was great.
Liz Laughs!
Josh: I mean, Shawn was fantastic. He was really wonderful. He was ah, incredibly focused, dedicated, willing to do anything, I mean, you know, he's a pretty busy guy.
Liz: Yeah. Right, I was...
Josh: He is. He's doing a few things. [looks at Tom]
Tom smiles at Josh!
Liz: I was actually shocked when I saw him pop up on the big screen. I was like,'oh, wait a minute'.
Josh: Yeah. I mean, he's, he's doing a lot of things, simultaneously, so for him to say, you know, this is what I'm here to do and I'm totally dedicated to it was ah, you know, was incredible. I grew up listening to his music.
Liz: Laughs.
Josh: So, all of sudden to be in these scenes with him, yeah.
Liz: Did you say any like one liners to him?
Josh: I was rapping the whole time.
Liz Laughs!
Tom Laughs!
Josh: I was like, 'you gotta check out my album'!
Liz: What like can't stop won't stop?
Josh: Just drops it, and it's hot.
Liz: Laughs!
Tom Laughs! Tom Clears Throat.
Liz: So, was this your first time meeting Kevin Costner for both of you?
Tom: Mmhmmm.
Josh: Yes.
Liz: What was that like?
Tom: Ah, well for me, I thought I was going to be prepared and be all cool and then I saw him, and I was like a, I was like a fan. Um, but, you know, we, I met Kevin about twenty minutes before we shot the scene that I had with him, and he came over, and we just kind of talked about some things that turns out we had in common. And, what I realize now is that he was just sorting of putting me at ease and just you know. And, then we got into the scene. And, he's a great partner in the scene. I mean, that's, that's one of the, I think, I think one of the best things you can, you can say about another actor is just the...
Liz: Right.
Tom: Being a good partner. It was fantastic.
Liz: What about you? What was it like?
Josh: I just had an image of Tom like as one of these you know like Beatles Mania girls when he saw him and totally flipped out.
Tom Laughs!
Liz: Laughs!
Josh: This is mine! Screaming!
Tom: Smiles: You know, he was surprised when I gave him that Field of Dreams poster to sign.
Josh Laughs!
Liz Laughs!
Tom: He was surprised.
Josh: Did he give you guys any tips at all? Like any you know, or just words of like encouragement, or anything like that?
Josh: "Don't suck!"
Tom Laughs: Yeah.
Liz: Laughs: "Don't suck." [laughs]
Josh: Don't suck! He was great to work with. I really, I mean, I was definitely, you know, I grew up watching so many of his movies.
Liz: Right.
Josh: So, I was a little intimidated to say the least, and I, when I met him, we were shooting a scene where I'm, my character's on the phone with his character and he showed up and read lines off camera.[Josh looks at Tom, who nods.] You know, he walks in, we're shooting in this hotel room in Cleveland, and he walks in with the sunglasses, and he's just a, I mean, he's just a movie star, you know.
Liz: Right.
Josh: And, ah, so it was, it was really fun to have him there cause not a lot of people would do that to read off camera.
Tom: Nodding: True.
Josh: So, that was really, I mean that helped me tremendously.
Liz: Right. What about Jennifer Garner? What was it like? Where were, cause she's kind of like really the only girl in the Guys Locker Room, so to speak.
Josh: I know. Yeah.
Liz: What was that like having her around?
Josh: You know, I really didn't work with Jen a whole lot.
Josh looks at Tom who shakes his head 'no'.
Josh: And, my interactions with her on set were limited, but she's incredibly sweet, and like, I said before, Jen is to me the heartbeat of the movie.
Liz: Yeah.
Josh: She really brings that ,that pulse to it.
Tom: Yeah. I didn't even...
Liz: Tom?
Tom: I didn't even meet her in Cleveland. I met her at a Screening, actually where I met you.
Josh: Yeah. We did.
Tom: We all met at a screening in Los Angeles. Um, but in the film. Yeah, she's great. Her empathy is like, is beautiful in the film.
I hope you guys like.
