Prompt: Is America the greatest country in the world?
No, many would say that America is not the greatest country in the world. With racism, sexism, and blatant discrimination rampant in the country and encouraged by the current president, Donald Trump, America is far from great. The very slogan our president uses is rendered useless by the actions he encourages and presents himself. Nazis free to walk on the street, KKK, ICE, and other hate groups are free from the consequences of their actions.
Recently, a white female officer broke into a black man’s home and shot him dead for not complying with her orders. The woman was not jailed and was free to do what she liked over the course of the two days post of the blatant murder she committed. When police finally responded, they issued a search of the murdered black man’s home and found weed, which they state justified his death. (Washingtonpost.com)
More discrimination is found at ICE, who lost 1,475 children of immigrants last year. Not only were these children, these babies, ripped from their parents arms, they may never be fund. Children living in worse, inhumane, conditions far worse than any animal shelter. Some reports say these children are kept withoutbeds, clothing, or proper food, causing many of these children an easily preventable death at such young ages. Yet our president supports what ICE is doing and lies about all the negative things happening. (washingtonpost.com)
Earlier this month the protection and rights of transgender individuals were stripped away by our president’s justice administration. Trans workers and students are no longer protected by the law, unless they are murdered. (usatoday.com) Our president blatantly encourages hate groups, hate crimes, separation of families, racism, is anti-lgbtqa+, and only works to help the rich, white, cisgendered men of our country, leaving it a constant hellscape for most of the population. America is far from great and continues to fall.
Women, women of color, gays, lesbeans, men of color, agender, transgender, demisexual, bisexual, pansexual, panromantic, aromantic, asexual, nonbinary, genderqueer, queer, and more minorities are no longer protected by those who promised that all men and women were equal. They are in constant danger at home, work, and out in public. Mundane occurrences such as shopping are not safe for anyone who is not a straight, cis, white male.
It is not even safe for the students to attend school and walk out alive. Twenty three school shootings occurred twenty one weeks into 2018. The amount of shootings occurring more than once a week on average in the US. (cnn.com) And no gun control laws have been passed. For back to school shopping parents have been buying bullet proof material for their children’s backpacks. Millenials and Gen Z have been demonized for protesting in favor of better control so that they may live another day. Authority figures have failed the two youngest generations. And they are fighting back. They are fighting back even though it means being prepared to deal with grown adults threatening them with guns, violence, and punishment. And not always are these threats just words. America has failed its people, and now young adults and children are fighting for their rights. America is not the greatest country in the world.
