Judgment – Maedhros/Maglor
Maedhros emerged from the Halls, life heavily settling over him like a mantle, repentant and reborn. The fresh air he gulped down as the first breath of his new lungs tasted too sweet to his unused senses, too sweet to his guilty conscience that still felt like he did not deserve this second chance at living.
The first thing his eyes settled on and truly saw beyond the vibrant colours of the world was a figure standing in the glade before the gates of Mandos, waiting. Someone dearly familiar while changed in unknown ways. Maglor had always stood shorter than Maedhros, merely a finger width taller than Fingon that was negligible enough to make them the shortest of Finwë’s grandchildren, but something about his quiet poise and presence made him appear to tower above his elder brother. The minstrel look aged, though gracefully so, with dignified silver streaks shot through his ebony hair around his temples, haloing the sharp points of his ears, and his Treelit eyes radiating the wisdom of the Ages spent alive… unlike his brothers and father.
He was different from the lovely little songbird Maedhros had loved in both his youth and Beleriand, but he was no less handsome for it.
Maglor stood there with gentle patience and waited for Maedhros to approach him, and waited again for what Maedhros would say, remaining deliberately silent. The tactic worked effectively, for Maedhros could not endure the pressing quiet, breaking it with a shattered wail of “I am sorry…”
Maglor’s cold and expectant gaze softened. Shaking his head he gathered Maedhros’ face between the tender hold of his long scarred over hands and shut his reborn brother up with a press of soft lips against lips.
It lasted but a moment, yet to Maedhros’ untried body the new-old sensation of a kiss was overwhelming enough to punch the air from his chest; a cherished sweet agony.
Then Maglor pulled back, still shaking his head, and told him, “We are both pardoned in the eyes of the Valar, have served our sentence in our own way. We may yet perform restoration and penance to those we have wronged ‘till the breaking of the world, but we are no longer weighed down by those sins. Do not apologise to me, Nelyo. However, if this is what you need to accept absolution and to embrace your new chance at life, then I shall say it: I forgive you.”
