“Do you think we’ll ever…be a couple-couple?”
June and Mai were sitting on top of desks in the art room after school, the sherbert swirl sunset of pink and orange filtering in through the half covered windows and lending an air of serenity to the scene. Their fingers were intertwined, leaving one hand free for each to do little doodles all over their respective notebooks.
Mai tilted her head at June’s question and the girl blushed, fiddling with her orange sweater sleeve. “J-just...you know...”
Mai frowned, eyebrows bunching together to indicate that she was more confused than hurt. “Are we not a couple-couple?”
She felt June’s hand tense a bit in her own. “I meant like, not secret. Hiding this is exciting, sure...” she opened her mouth a few times, looking frustrated with herself.
“I just...why are we even hiding?”
Mai rested her pencil on the table carefully, as if any noise too loud would shatter something important.
“I...I’m not sure. I’m scared. For some reason. I think...I’m scared of Jared.”
June started, pulling her hand back as if Mai had burned it. “Are you still in love with him? If so, I can--”
Mai lurched forward to grab her girlfriend’s shoulders. “I swear, I’m not. Or, I’m like 95% sure I’m not. I don’t want him doing something.” Realizing how that sounded, she backtracked.
“What I mean is that if I tell everyone we’re dating, and he says something suave like he always does or what if he even says he loves me...what if all of those feelings come back? Like, there will always be a part of me that loves him just because of how strong it was. But,” she hurriedly continued as she saw June’s face drop. Mai reached out to cup June’s face in both hands, smiling gently.
“All of me loves all of you. I love you, June. And I promise that we can tell everyone soon. Let’s just...enjoy the afternoon right now. Just us.”
June smiled genuinely as she teared up, but she blinked them away. “I love you too, Mai.” Laying her head onto Mai’s shoulder, she blew away any remaining doubts. They could wait.
Because right now, there was just the two of them.
