George photographed at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, c. April 1961. Perhaps some of the less often seen beautiful photos taken by Jurgen Vollmer. George is 18 in these photos.

Astridd Kirchherr (1938-2020) took her favourite picture in April 1962, days after her fiance, Stuart Sutcliffe, died in her arms on the way to a Hamburg hospital. You may have seen it: Sutcliffe's best friend, John Lennon, sits in sombre half-light with a boyish George Harrison behind him. "When you see John's little face, it's so sad," Kirchherr says, a catch in her throat even now. "He looks so lost sitting there, and there's this 18-year-old boy standing behind him looking so strong. George aboard a ferry in Hamburg in early 1961 (part one). These beautiful photos were taken by Jurgen Vollmer, of course. 

At Beatleweek this year, Jurgen spoke about how he has quite severe social anxiety and doesn’t like to be in groups of very many people. He said he was alright one on one, if there was a third person… then it would depend on who it was, but any more and he started feeling overwhelmed. George was one of the first people Jürgen asked if he could photograph (he photographed a lot of ‘rockers’ in the late 50s and early 60s) and these pictures were the result. 

Also, Jurgen wasn’t the least bit sentimental about keeping photos just because who was in them or when/where they were taken, so these blurry, low quality photos are a real treasure because if Jurgen had his way, he might have binned the lot of them! (Noooooo!)

Photos 5 - 9 - All by Jürgen Vollmer. These are some of the pictures Jürgen spoke about during his interview.

Pic 5 is a photo I took off the projection screen of a Jürgen Vollmer picture of John and Stu. Jürgen spoke about his pictures quite critically. He also didn’t seem the least bit in awe of the subject - he wasn’t ‘look, it’s the Beatles’, but rather spoke about the composition and artistic value of the pictures themselves, rather than the people in them. He said he would have scrapped this photo all together (thinking it to be rubbish) if it wasn’t for Stu being in it. Mark Lewishon, and me, and I think about everyone else were horrified, haha. ‘No! You can’t do that!’ 

Pic 6 is Jürgen Vollmer with the famous mop top haircut. Although for some reason it’s incorrectly attributed to Klaus Voormann quite often, it was Jürgen who came up with the Beatles haircut. He said he was looking for a rebellious style hair cut and came up with this when he was swimming and came out of the water with all his hair swept forward like that. He let it dry like that, cut it into shape a bit, and there you go. Jürgen says no one else had anything like that at the time. 

Pic 7 is Jürgen and Paul in Paris, October 1961. On their way to Spain with John’s 21st birthday money, Paul and John ran into Jürgen by chance and decided to stay in Paris instead. At this time they asked Jürgen to give them the same mop top haircut as he wore. At first he refused, but then cut their hair for them. This is one early attempt at the mop top (Paul’s hair still sticking up a bit). This photo might have been taken by John.  

Pic 8 is Paul and John at a nightclub in Paris. Photo taken by Jürgen (he didn’t like that one either, haha). Paul and John had asked Jürgen to speak to the manager of the nightclub (his friend) and ask if they could perform there that night. The manager refused, but oh, just imagine if they had! 

And lastly, pic 9 is one of Jürgen’s fabulous photos of George in Hamburg. Jürgen spoke about how he has quite severe social anxiety and doesn’t like to be in groups of very many people.
