More on the Yang/Emerald thing, I think you touched upon this at one point but Ren saying that they should trust Emerald because "she's scared" just didn't work for me. Like, everyone at that point in the story was scared besides Salem (and Tyrian I guess, when he was still in Atlas). And I heavily disagree with that anon too, Yang's handling of Emerald is honestly the exact thing any rational hero would do; for all she knew Em could have forced Oscar to pretend or was hallucinating him.
I think it’s another great example of the audience’s knowledge interfering with our expectations for how other characters should respond to a situation. We’ve gotten far more insight into Emerald’s journey than the heroes have. Not just basic facts like her swearing to help Oscar escape, but also introspective moments that no one but us is privy to: her looking horrified as Beacon burns, staring defeated as Cinder leaves the room, etc. As someone who functions as a character, these moments cue us into Emerald’s real state of mind and inform us that yes, she really is remorseful and really is hoping to help now. Yang and the others, for whom Emerald functions as a real person? They’ve got none of that. They know only the woman who helped destroy their school, leading to two deaths and a lost arm, attacked them at Haven, nearly killed Weiss, is here now assisting Salem in destroying the kingdom. Doubting her isn’t just rational for a hero, it’s rational period. Emerald, to my recollection, hasn’t done a single thing pre-helping Oscar that would make the heroes think she’s secretly one of them, or could at least become that. Whereas we’ve gotten to know her as a conflicted antagonist, they’ve only ever known her as a straight up villain. Which is why the “she’s scared” line doesn’t work. As you say, everyone is scared, but even beyond that... so what? What does being scared have to do with her loyalty, motivations, and any potential plans she might have in the works? She can be scared and still intend to hurt them. The show acts like those are mutually exclusive when they’re very much not. Plus, how do we know she isn’t scared because she means harm? Or that being scared won’t lead to more harm? This is another moment where I wish the show would actually delve into the specifics and limitations of a semblance. Ren can sense emotions now, but does that mean he has any idea what the emotion stems from? What if Emerald is scared because she’s setting up a trap and is fearful that Yang and the others will realize before it snaps shut? What if she’s scared enough that the second Salem shows up she’ll toss them at her feet, saving her own skin? Knowing she’s scared without knowing why — which would require more of a telepathic semblance — is pretty much meaningless, especially during a major battle. (It’s something else entirely if, during a moment of calm, Ren were to sense that someone is oddly nervous, realizing that they’re up to something because their emotional state doesn’t match the situation. Emerald’s emotional state could not be more appropriate for what’s going on around them.) I just can’t take lines like that seriously and I wish the show didn’t expect us to, especially in a story that’s otherwise trying to be “deep.” Better to have Yang laugh mirthlessly at Ren’s claim, calling it out for the thematic nonsense it is. “She’s scared? Yeah, so was Raven. Look where that got us.”
I think I sent an ask like this to someone else too, but I feel that the writers thought of the idea of Yang sacrificing herself to save Ruby before ironing out the details surrounding it.
I feel like there are 4 major problems with that moment.
1: Neither Weiss or Ruby even tried to help Yang. I can kinda excuse Ruby, since she was in the middle of a fight, but when you give her a physics-breaking semblance, the writers kinda lost some excuses. Weiss doesn’t even try!
2: Yang running out of aura was dumb since we see Ren running out of aura for the… what?- Seventh time that in-universe day? Like… If Ren’s at full aura, then shouldn’t Yang also be at full?
3: We saw Maria tossing around Neo like a ragdoll earlier. You’re telling me that that elderly lady with cybernetic eyes can do that to Neo, but Yang can’t land a hit when Neo’s distracted in trying to kill Ruby?
4: Yang’s decision-making process was stupid here. Unlike Volume 3, where Blake was stabbed and vulnerable to splash damage, Ruby is holding her own against Cinder and is actively fighting, and therefore should have aura. So Yang could have tried to engage Neo instead of just taking the hit. Admittedly, this is Yang, so taking the hit isn’t out of character for her, but not engaging is also just as dumb! Is this what Tai’s whole “Your soul is a temper tantrum” thing led to? Yang deciding to just take a hit instead of fight? Which is what his ‘criticisms’ were all about correcting???
Is it bad if I headcanon Yang as bi? Someone just yelled at me about how I'm "erasing lesbians" over it, she's not confirmed to be anything but wlw right?
I’ve seen some people say headcanoning Yang as bi is lesbian erasure and other people say that headcanoning her as lesbian is bi erasure. Both those takes are equally stupid and both those headcanons are equally valid.
Yang could be anything except straight at the moment in canon so seeing her as lesbian or bi or pan, etc. is all totally fine.
I feel like they thought up the scene of "Yang sacrifices herself to save Ruby and takes the fall", which is a good idea on its own, but as usual they've neglected details to truly enhance the scene and make it work as well as it could.
theres literally so many ways they coulda had this happen that didnt look stupid and they chose to just have everyone forget their powers and sit there cying
they had the decency to have ruby preoccupied andunable to help, they couldnt do the same shit for weiss and blake?????? its ridiculous it casts weiss 0 seconds to cast her glyphs honestly
Lately I've been thinking about a Volume 7 rewrite that has Yang and Ren being much more outwardly loyal to Ironwood for a myriad of reasons, to the point with arguing with their teams about them going behind his back (instead of Yang mentioning it once and getting shot down), and culminating in a sense of real personal betrayal when he decides to abandon Remnant. Thoughts?
Bruh, I would love something like that. I’ve always had a problem not with Yang starting to question Ruby, but because it was done so weakly. It was literally one moment of “Should we do this?” and when her team went “Yeah lol”, that was it.
It would also mean that characters that don’t really interact have some great chances to have deep conversations. Why did Ren want to side with Ironwood? Why would Yang? What does that say not only for the friendship between them, but the relationship between them and those that DON’T side with Ironwood and still actively lie to him, i.e Ruby and Nora.
On top of that, it would now bleed into the whole situation with Robyn? Would Yang want to still tell her the truth when everyone on her team are lying already without much care? Would she be convinced by Blake to do it or would Blake do it herself/with someone else?
It’d be so much more interesting for the final argument with Ironwood himself. Rather than the RWBY Hivemind all saying he’s wrong, have diversity, have some actually see some validity in his plan even if it’s still morally wrong to leave people behind for the Grimm. Having morally grey situations and reactions is GREAT, but CRWBY is more interested in making it black and white with RWBY in the right as heroes and Ironwood in the wrong, especially with this writing in V8.
While some of the dialogue was iffy, I'm so appreciative of Jaune, Yang, and Ren letting themselves be arrested to try and talk things out with Winter and the Ace Ops, and that it actually worked. Almost like compromises can be made when you don't treat your opposition as demons no matter what (RWB...)
the contrast of rjy actually working with people they consider against them vs rwb_ just ... sitting around in the schnee manor & not wanting to do anything that does actual fucking effort like may said, is both hilarious & enraging. i did appreciate that winter made the tactical decision, even if rjy putting oscar over the entirety of atlas before they proposed taking the bomb in themselves was just. hhh. i know you guys care for oscar but he is one person. salem is going to kill everyone if she’s not dealt with.
