Drive
A workshop by JBWC volunteer, Camila
Today’s workshop was inspired by one my favorite songs “Drive” by the band Incubus. The message of the song is about being fearful about doing something but then realizing you are in control and taking the chance anyway.
Some of the prompts I had for the young writers were:
1) Brainstorm a list of things you have always wanted to do or try but have not because of fear, not having enough time, or an outside influence talked you out of it
2) Write a poem, short story or comic about one of your aspirations and what is keeping you from doing it.
One of the young writers shared a poem about wanting to learn new languages, one wrote a list of places he wanted to travel, one performed part of a song he wrote about wanting to record an album. That young writer also accompanied me by playing guitar so I could sing in front of the young writers, which is one of my fears (singing in front of an audience)!
Here’s an excerpt from a poem written by Hannah:
I want to dedicate the rest of
my life to the study of
kinesics and make you
the subject of my thesis.
I want to build a language
from the way you blink in Morris code.
Do you think that your feet
on foreign ground still look like
your feet?
Do you think that the next
time I see you we’ll still
understand each other?”
