This just in... (it's a big ol' rant Fam, buckle up and expect to see my personal, inexperienced opinion thrown into a couple of angry paragraphs)
My parents don't think there should be any diversity in franchises like Star Wars and Marvel because "it's never been that way before".
"It's supposed to be an escape from real life"
But like, fuck all the women and POC who wanna escape from their life too, right?
"Their primary audience is white males, they just have to accept that and make the movies for them"
Okay, fuck you. More than white males go to see these movies, and diverse people DESERVE TO GET REPRESENTATION.
Honest to God, I'm sick of seeing a bunch of white dudes run around and save the day. I'm sick of it. It's freaking boring. Give me my POC characters! Give me my badass women, who can still be feminine at the end of the day! Give my my LGBTQ+ characters and have that not be their only trait! Give me my disabled characters! Let them be the heroes too!
"Oh, Captain Marvel is gonna fail cos all the white boys don't wanna see it now"
Fuck the white boys. Not literally. Lots of them suck. But fuck them.
I want more female super heroes. Can you believe this is Marvel's first main movie with a female lead? It's first. Before now, not including the one-shots with Peggy, Wasp was the only female hero to have her name even in the title of the movie. I'm so freaking excited to see a female superhero!
Wonder Woman was amazing for me. Coming out of that I felt strong. I can't wait to feel the same way after watching Captain Marvel. And even if I don't, what a wonderful step forward in putting women in lead roles for Marvel. I'm not discounting any of our other badass leads we have, trust me when I say I adore them.
But how exciting is it to finally have the main character be a woman. The title character be a woman.
Marvel has been getting better. Black Panther was a stunning movie in and out, with such a diverse cast of talented black actors. Spiderman too, is full of diversity, and it sounds like that's going to get even better in Far From Home. It's just so disheartening to hear my parents, particularly my dad, essentially taking the side of the same gross people who chase women off social media for a character they acted. Yeah, acted. Not wrote. Like, if you really have a problem with the actions of a character, THE ACTOR REALLY ISN'T TO BLAME FOR THAT??? LEAVE THEM ALONE.
I thought the Star Wars debate between my dad and I would get better, but it didn't. When it comes down to it, my dad doesn't care about diversity. He doesn't care about feminism or female empowerment. He thinks the white boys (and I don't mean all white boys, I mean those white boys) should be pandered to because "they're the main market, like it or not".
Star Wars is not just for white boys. It never has been. It never will be. It's for everyone. I'm glad they've been trying to step out and make changes to add a more diverse cast. I'm just so sorry that they've had so much backlash while doing so. I wish I could tell them to keep at it. I'm just one white girl. I'm pretty privileged when it comes down to it, but there are others who deserve a diverse Star Wars, who deserve to see themselves in Star Wars, and those people are not white men.
I can only speak from my own experience. I've not had to deal with that many hardships when it comes to seeing myself on screen. But shit, when the new She-Ra came out and I saw a cartoon character with dark blonde hair, I lost it! I was so excited to see a blonde, that actually had the same colour hair as me, instead of your typical bleach-blonde princess!
How much more excited do you think people of colour get when they finally see themselves represented on screen? People with disabilities? People in the LGBTQ+ community?
They deserve representation too.
