I do really love kakagen because they both have this sort of laid back cool guy image that's competing with their serious competent vibe but they're competing in different ways. like okay kakashi is like an onion and his layers (to me) are basically cool and serious (people who dont know him at all) -> laid back and weird (people who know him) -> serious and kind of frighteningly competent (people who know him well enough to see him under stress) -> goof (people who REALLY know him, gai, team seven, etc) -> central knot of trauma (you gotta really seriously dig) -> kind person underneath all that. and I think genma's layers are much more like. just alternating between 'ridiculous' and 'serious' until you get so disoriented that you just have to accept that there's no end and there's no one real Genma. he's constantly switching between them and one is almost always transparently masking the other. Kakashi is compartmentalized in such a way that he's wearing like fifteen masks at a time but they can be peeled off with really really really hard work, Genma is compartmentalized in such a way that he's more like a maze than a drawer. what you see is what you get, even though youre seeing double. and I tink that difference makes them reallyyyy interesting to play with because kakashi is desperate for someone to know the real him and is scared on some level that there ISN'T a real him, and genma I think can come along and just immediately be like ahah. I've got your number. and can see kakashi's layers pretty quickly but also moves through life with the knowledge that there's not always a 'real' person. like the real kakashi might be the goofy one. but it might also be the serious one. or the sad one. or the kind one. the real kakashi is the whole picture. and that's a sentiment I think kakashi is probably lacking in his life, and honestly sort of lacking in fandom depictions. there's a lot of kks ship stuff that focuses on bringing out his sillier or gentler side and I am 100% guilty of that myself, but I also think that it's important to get the layers in there cause he really doesn't know who he is without the layers! I appreciate a kakashi ship that has the potential to let his sharper edges in without emphasizing that they're part of the mask because like... the mask is also kind of part of him. and when I say I want to see kakashi's sharp edges I dont just mean his trauma, I also mean him being nonchalant and a bit of an asshole and bad at talking to people! I think that genma is easy going enough and has enough in common with kakashi to sort of get how he ticks, and I think that they could have a seemingly low commitment relationship that's mostly built on a foundation of just letting the other person exist as they are. no emphasis on fixing kakashi. I think genma would give him the time to build down his walls at his own pace, which is something that is so invaluable in a relationship when you're used to having to fight all your instincts just to show love the 'right' way. the concept of kakashi being quietly loved for who he is without feeling any pressure to take or give love in ways that frighten him... yeah.... they're like two emotionally complicated wolf dogs and Im putting them in the same enclosure. here's someone else who needs to be loved but knows their sharp edges and high walls make it hard. maybe you can love each other
Whenever im making up fanfics in my head about kakashi i cant help but make it a ship with genma.
Don't know why, but the Genma in my head is always so in love with Kakashi that despite there being so many good Kakashi ships it always ends up with Genma as the love interest
But that always can be blamed bc of myself being whipped with the both of them.
Hot ppl dating hot ppl is always nice

the hand that feeds (kakashi/genma, m, post-canon)
Gai pushes himself too hard in attending Kakashi's Hokage ceremony. Kakashi does paperwork in his hospital room. Genma stands guard over them both. (Or: Kakashi makes Genma give up his trusty senbon, but offers him something else in exchange. He plans to be a generous Hokage, after all.)
Notes: for kinktober's finger sucking. Contains power dynamics of the hokage variety, unnegotiated kink (but consensual), post-gate gai disability, mentions of past jealousy, and minor self-harm that kakashi puts a stop to. Part of my extended Naruto fic universe, but you don't have to read the rest to understand this. Gai/Genma have been together for over a decade. Kakashi&Gai have been dancing around each other for a long fucking time, but have never acted on it. Gai/Genma are explicitly poly, which Kakashi knows.

Summary: Kakashi doesn't do relationships, as a general rule. He'd had a family, and they'd all died. He'd had a mentor, and teammates that were starting to become what he might actually have called friends, and they died. The point being that Kakashi had been relatively unsure about forming social connections in the first place, and then life had backed up these feelings by cheerfully murdering everyone he really cared about. OR How Kakashi goes from being a lonely, bitter bastard, to finding the family he never thought he'd have again.
