A pet peeve I’m finding more and more in story-telling is the lazy “get rich solution”.
When a writer wants to have a plotline where something far fetched happens but they don’t want it to seem unrealistic the solution is to make the MC rich.
That or the ending of the story having a “good ending” by making the MC rich.
There are so many novel ways to give your MC ressources and if you’re trying to make an escapism media piece and the end goal or the biggest problem the character has is not enough money then it’s not escapism.
Including all the isekai stories where the character needs to become rich. It’s never big enough to turn me away unless it was already an iffy story, but it shows such a lcl of imagination. Like why can’t we imagine a world where capitalism doesn’t exist. Heck I would even love a bartering system.
The only one who did it well is Terry Pratchett because he made it funny. Sam “I’m a gods damned class traitor” Vimes who’se wealth doesn’t solve his problems and who uses it to help everyone around him because all he wanted was to marry the hot dragon lady.
