There were two paths for boys like him. 

Simmer down and grow up, maybe get a nice job and raise a family.

Or burn bright and fast, and never reach thirty. 

His mother always begged him to simmer down. Of course she would. He was her son. Her one, precious child.

But he was not a flame that would simmer down. He was not a boy who would reach manhood.

And he was fine with that. He had made peace long ago. Family life wasn’t how he lived. 

The adrenaline of a car race. Running from blue and red flashing lights. Sneaking in late night or early morning smelling of smoke and gasoline.

That was how he lived. And it would be how he died.
