the bprd are Living The Dream
when you first get into hellboy you think ok, nazis summoning a demon but he’s raised by humans and eventually grows up to hunt down occult bad guys and he’s super cool and also complex because of the dark destiny he’s fighting. solid enough. then he quits the bureau for eight years and then you get to bprd and suddenly it’s like:
abe sapien used to be a rich occultist white guy in the 1800s and maybe he’s connected to some jellyfish deity. Hellboy’s replacement is a military guy who got cursed by a Bolivian jaguar spirit and eats people when he misses his acupuncture appointment. the gang takes in a telepathic mummy who was taken in by Abe’s past self’s rich occultist friends. the frog monsters from seed of destruction have joined forces with a subterranean race and turned earth into a walking dead meets pacific rim situation. trevor bruttenholm fought a nazi vampire plague on a rocket to learn more about Hellboy’s exact origin from a demon possessing a little girl. England has disappeared entirely. people are worshipping eldritch eggs. a nazi ceo in the most super-villainy outfit ever joined forces with the frogs and the subterraneans to make a new world. there’s a whole thing with monks and liz losing her mind for several months. johann the ectoplasmic man gets a temporary body and uses it to drink and fuck while his coworkers fight for their lives. one of the apocalypse survivors is a clairvoyant girl with genetic chimerism whose would-be sister is a ghost that tells her the future. the plot of reanimator happens. the apocalypse is here and it’s not hellboys fault. but that’s genuinely not even everything.
you may ask, “what the fuck is happening” and you would be answering your own question. “what the fuck” is exactly what’s happening.
Some memes and stuff idk
Group shots, I guess?

2026 woke nuclear family
Yanno I'll always have a soft spot for the movie cuz it was my first ever exposure to Hellboy, but after reading the comics and then rewatching the movie you realize how different they are from each other. It's not that the way they characterized him is completely wrong or anything but how they wrote him in the movie makes him seem so, childish. He acts more like a rebellious teenager rather than the grown 50 something year old man that he is in the comics and same goes for all the other characters, Abe is delegated to some sort of sidekick-esque character, Liz, while still upholding some of the nuance she had in the comics, is turned into a love interest despite them never being implied to have that kind of relationship in the comics and Kate Corrigan isn't even there.
Some of my favourite Abe bits
