listening: love you for a long time - maggie rogers
hello, everyone! I typically get quite an early start to my day (5:30-5:45am), and I have lots of questions from people as to how I do it, especially as a university student. becoming an early riser in university is one of the best things I have ever done for myself and for my productivity, which is why I have decided to make this post! without further ado:
reasons I wake up early:
less distractions in the morning: with everyone sleeping, it is much easier for me to focus on my own tasks.
successful people are already doing it: successful people have limited time in their day to accomplish tasks and take personal time, which is why they get an early start.
more productivity: multiple studies have shown that waking up early leads to increased productivity.
breakfast: the most important meal of the day. enough said.
being happier: besides personal experience, research has shown that “morning people” tend to be happier and healthier.
how do I do it?
my mornings (and yours should, too!) start the night before:
unwinding: start to dim the lights an hour or so before bed, drink some non-caffeinated tea, and if you can, engage in some non-screen related activity approx. 20 minutes before you hit the day (for me, this is usually journaling or listening to calm music).
create a schedule for the next morning: decision fatigue is one of the hidden culprits that depletes our willpower for getting out of bed. in other words, when we wake up in the mornings, we are faced with a multitude of decisions to make: what to eat for breakfast, when to shower, who to text back or email, what to wear, etc. the way to eliminate decision fatigue in the morning is creating a careful plan for yourself the night before and sticking to it. develop this plan into your routine!
set a bedtime & alarm, and STICK to it: possibly the most important part of this post. your body needs routine. it works best in cycles. regularly going to bed at specified times of the evening & waking up at the same time each morning will ensure that you & your body get adjusted to rising early on a day-to-day basis.
wear warm pjs: if it is cold when you wake up, you’re not going to want to get out from under the covers. wear your warm pjs or at least have a sweatshirt & socks/slippers on hand to throw on the second you wake.
place a water bottle next to your bed: drink it when you first wake up! it will help you shake some of that morning grogginess, plus hydration.
the morning of:
don’t think. just do it: the five-second rule is POWERFUL. haven’t heard of it? click here.
sit up. drink some of your water. open your curtains.
meditation or yoga: i like to start off my mornings with a fifteen-minute yoga routine. this can be powerful: doing yoga first thing in the morning helps me to center myself, set my intentions for the day, and start my morning in a way that is not immediately related to work/university.
breakfast: at this point, i plug in some happy tunes & make breakfast! breakfast is my most important meal of the day: i try to eat something both healthy & filling (usually oatmeal mixed in with fruit!). ideally, a protein-packed meal would be best for this time of day.
review your plan for the day: usually during breakfast i take the time to prioritize and review my schedule for the day. if there are only three things i have time to do today, what are they, and in what order do they need to be completed? a bujo works, but here is the planner i use. in addition to plenty of space for writing to-do lists & notes, it also has a time table on each page, which i use to schedule my day via hourly time-blocks.
helpful resources
sleepyti.me: this is a sleep calculator that really works! the science behind it is that you will 500% more refreshed in the day if you don’t wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. sleepyti.me helps you to wake up at the optimal time so that you don’t interrupt any cycles.
WhiteNoise: a free app, WhiteNoise gives you a ton of different tracks and calming sounds to choose from that will play from your phone all night and will help you sleep.
alar.my: alarmy can force you to get out of bed by completing math problems, taking a photo of a pre-set location within your room, or by shaking it. i used this when i first started trying to wake up early & found it really helpful.
these are all of the tips i have for waking up early! i hope you find this helpful, and of course feel free to send me a message if you have any questions :-)
