Dart Journalism Awards Recognizes AP and Washington Post
The Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, based at the Columbia School of Journalism in New York, announced the winners of the 2016 Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. The winners were the Associated Press (AP) and the Washington Post.
The Associated Press won for their multimedia series ‘The Other Disappeared’, which detailed the lives and violent deaths of people from Iguala, Mexico, a town riddled with killings and kidnapping.
According to Dart Center, the judges described the AP series “The Other Disappeared” as being reported with “incredible depth rigor and compassion.” The judges believed “The Other Disappeared” shined a light on the different ways people experience and manage their trauma, and exemplifies what the Dart Award stands for, according to the judges. This story was told through videos and photos combined with writing and Dart described this multimedia presentation as “powerful and heartbreaking.”
The Washington Post was awarded for “A Survivor’s Story,” which documented the life of Cheyeanne Fitzgerald, a 16-year-old Oregon student, who survived a school shooting. The Washington post describes the aftermath of the school shooting, Cheyeanne’s survival, and the severe physical and mental challenges she faces every day.
On the Washington Post’s “A Survivor’s Story,” the Center explains the judges were enthralled with the story. Calling the writing “beautifully detailed” and praised the team for showing the difficulties the road to recovery holds, and how survivor stories are often messy, traumatic, and hopeful all at the same time.
The winners received a $5,000 cash prize and were recognized at a public ceremony and winners’ roundtable on May 4 at 5:30 at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism.
Dart Donates Thermal Imaging Cameras to Help Save Lives
Dart Container Corporation has donated four $5,000 thermal imaging cameras to the Delhi Township Fire Department and the Mason Fire Department, making them the only two local fire departments with this new technology. The cameras were presented to the Delhi Townships Board of Trustees on March 1.
The thermal imaging cameras are able to find hard-to-detect trapped victims in buildings - they can detect heat energy through smoke, walls and doors, and help firefighters locate dangerous hot spots and trapped victims. The cameras have the capability to zoom and freeze images, and capture videos.
Brian Ball, the Delhi Township Fire Department Chief, explained that the new technology is amazing and will help the Delhi firefighters save more lives and property, and with the cameras, they will be able to do this safely. Ball and the Board of Trustees expressed their gratitude to Dart Container Corporation and their continued support of the community and the emphasis they place on safety.
Dart Container Corporation has helped fire departments conduct training exercises and has contributed manpower and equipment to help with emergency responses.
Jim Lammers, Dart Container President stated that Dart Container, with roots in the area dating back to 1937, is committed to mid-Michigan, and has been since its founding, and that they are happy to support local emergency responders and provide them with the tools they need to make the local community as safe as possible.
Dart Realty to Construct a Children’s Resort
Dart Realty announced plans to build a children’s resort on the Cayman Islands as part of the new tourism district surrounding Dart’s newest hotels.
Earlier last week, Dart Realty shared its plan to build a five-star hotel, next to Kimpton Seafire. Jackie Doak, Dart Realty’s chief operating officer, explained that the two hotels will anchor a new resort district between the North Sound and Seven Mile Beach.
Plans for the district are still being discussed, but they will likely include a children’s resort unaffiliated with any single hotel Ms. Doak said. The resort would include daily activities and excursions for children, such as zip-lining, kayaking, climbing walls, swimming pools and slides. Tree houses, which will be placed around the resort, and a lazy river, which will let children float to different parts of the property, will provide children places to explore while on the resort.
Along with these activities, there will be “sleepover” bunkers for children so parents can take the night off or visit Cayman Brac or Little Cayman.
The goal of the new children’s resort is to create a family friendly venue, which will make the Cayman Islands the top destination for families. Ms. Doak has seen the basic components in her own family trips and hopes the developers can create a unique approach for Dart Realty’s new hotel.
This resort’s headquarters will be between the two hotels, but will feature activities all over the resort district. The children’s resort is in the planning stage, but the hope is to develop it alongside the five-star hotel.
Ms. Doak said the details of the resort will be determined in a master plan for the area, which is in the works.
New Building opens in Camana Bay by Dart Realty
On January 27, Dart Realty Ltd. opened 18 Forum Lane, their latest building in Camana Bay. Hon Wayne Panton, the Minister for Commerce, and other members of the Camana Bay and Grand Cayman business community attended the opening ceremony.
The new building located at 18 Forum Lane achieved LEED Gold certification in design, and was built for sustainability. At 86,000 square feet, it expands the leasable Class-A office space in the Town Centre to 400,000 square feet, explained Jackie Doak, Dart Realty’s Chief Operating Officer.
Ms. Doak cited a PwC report to explain that by the year 2020 all buildings in advanced economies will have to have a sustainability rating. She continued to say that by 2020 all livable spaces will be designed with green zones, good air quality, and spaces for social activity.
The report perfectly embodies the innovation and design philosophy behind Camana Bay, which includes sustainability, new urbanist principles of walkability, green areas, and a strong community.
Ken Dart’s vision paired with Dart Realty Ltd.’s core value of innovation is what has put the company decades ahead of the curve, and what keeps them committed to excellence and sustainability in design, explained Mrs. Doak.
One of the first tenants, PwC, moved into the new building in December 2015. They occupy the fourth floor and part of the third floor of 18 Forum Lane. Graeme Sunley, a Senior Partner at PwC, was pleased to move in on time and significantly under budget, commending the construction led by DECCO.
Camana Bay emphasizes sustainability as the future of construction in the Cayman Islands. While 18 Forum Lane is the first of the Cayman Island buildings to receive LEED Gold-Certified standing, it will not be the last. Its sister building, designed with these Gold principles in mind, is projected to be completed by 2017.
The sister building will have four stories for retail and restaurant spaces. In addition to these spaces, it will offer office suites and add an additional 86,000 square feet to Camana Bay’s leasable space. These two buildings will share a 200,000 square feet courtyard, which will offer a great venue for outdoor events and meetings.
Like 18 Forum Lane, the new building will also minimize energy use with the use of aluminum shutters, which align with Caymanian architecture, solar panels, and landscaping to offer more shade in open areas. Mr. Sunley explained the perfect location of 18 Forum Lane and its sister project allows employees of companies to attend events within the mixed-use community and return to work easily.
Minds Inspired Announces 2015 Scholarship Recipients
Dart’s Minds Inspired has announced the 2015 Minds Inspired High School and William A. Dart Scholarship winners. The Minds Inspired Scholarship funds and mentors scholars through their high school education, while the William A. Dart Scholarship funds scholars to attend an accredited overseas institution.
This year’s winners of the Minds Inspired High School Scholarship, Jade Wilkinson and Christian Dyer, proved to be well rounded candidates both academically and athletically. Both of the 14 year old Cayman winners excelled in school with A and A* grades, all the while balancing a heavy extra-curricular activity schedule that included track and field, sailing, tag rugby, soccer and tennis.
The students awarded the scholarship will receive payment of all school fees for a period of four years, additional funds for books and uniforms, mentoring from Dart employees, enrichment activities, creation of a college fund that builds over the period of the scholarship, job experience and a grant of $1,000 for the math or science program at the scholar’s school.
Chloe DaCosta was this year’s William A. Dart Scholar and completed high school with a 4.17 GPA, special recognition on the Honor Roll and Effort Honor Role with distinction. Chloe was also involved in a variety of activities in her academic career including the Builders Club, Key Club, drama club, concert band, student council, swimming and track. Chloe has been accepted into Marymount Manhattan College in New York, where she plans to pursue a double Bachelor of Arts in jazz dance and body sciences. Chloe is set to receive funding to attend Marymount Manhattan College, mentoring from Dart employees and an opportunity to work with Dart’s diverse group of companies for work experience.
The Minds Inspired High School Scholarship program was launched in 2012 and the William A. Dart Scholarship program was launched in 2013. Both programs are designed to provide funding, mentorship and support to Caymanian students with exceptional academic records attending, or about to attend, university.
The Minds Inspired Education Program supports the Dart family’s philosophy of promoting education and fostering academic excellence in math and sciences.
Dart Announces Purchase of Barefoot Beach
Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd. announced that one of its subsidiaries purchased Barefoot Beach in Grand Cayman. The beach is located on the east end of the island and was originally due to be purchased by the Mandarin Oriental Hotel but negotiations fell through.
Barefoot Beach is zoned for tourism and the beach front property stretches over 20-acres. The clear water at this beach is home to vibrant coral formations and a thriving marine life, making it a popular snorkeling location.
Mark VanDevelde, CEO of Dart Realty, spoke of the great opportunity this location presents as a future coastal resort on the island. There are no imminent plans to develop this location, however, the consistent expansion of surrounding areas like Health City, and Eastern Districts bode well for its viability. Mr. VanDevelde explained that Dart Realty has numerous other developments in the country and this one will be somewhat reactionary to the growing demands of the island. The Cayman government would like to see the area used as part of an eastward expansion of the island’s tourism.
Camana Bay is another Dart development on the island that is continually expanding. They are currently focusing on approved infrastructure work that will connect Camana Bay to a planned Kimpton Hotel on Seven Mile Beach. Dart will widen the highway and build a new underpass. They hope to eventually expand Camana Bay to the west, which would take several years to complete.
