Dart Real Estate Aids in Hurricane Relief
In the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, residents of the British Overseas Territories impacted by the hurricanes have been forced to leave their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. The Cayman Islands have graciously received many of these families, and the government is working to accommodate as many people as possible during this difficult time.
Last week, the Cayman government declared a new policy that would facilitate the transition for families temporarily relocating to Cayman. The decree, which was announced by the Department of Education Services, will allow children between the ages of 5 and 17 to attend either public or private schools on the island for the 2017/2018 academic year. The government has not only made spaces for these children to attend, but also has waived public school fees for all British Overseas Territories evacuees.
In addition to opening schools, Cayman has also taken actions to help workers who evacuated from the British Oversees Territories. The government has provided temporary work permits for employees of over 30 international companies. These permits allow for the employees and their families to temporarily remain in the Cayman Islands as their Caribbean homes are rebuilt.
In the midst of this mass evacuation, other Cayman branches of government have also stepped up. The Department of Agriculture, for instance, has issued a quarantine to ensure that all pets coming along with families to the island are safe and meet all health and safety requirements. In an effort to keep these pets safe before they are reunited with their families, Dart Real Estate, a Ken Dart company, has thoughtfully donated a facility to temporarily hold these pets. The company holds land throughout the Cayman Islands, and is happy to help the refugee dogs from the British Oversees Territories.
