THE PEQUOD AND THE RACHEL
It was the Pequod that pursued Moby-Dick,
but in the end, Melville wanted us
to remember that it was the Rachel,
searching again for her own missing children,
who came upon Ishmael – yet another orphan.
I like diners. I love new Jersey diners. NJ is the diner capital. I’ve been going to them my whole life.
I started a Facebook group for my love. If you like diners (or love Jersey diners), check out the group at:

Though everywhere can seem like nowhere
At 16
Weekends in Paradelle turns 16 today. Quite a mature teenager.
Today this blog turns sixteen. The first post was on this day in 2008. Just a simple statement of purpose, followed the next day by an explanation of “paradelle.” Sixteen is a pretty carefree teenager year. High school, thoughts of college or jobs, young love, getting a driving permit or license, almost old enough to legally drink alcohol and vote – but not quite there on any of it. I’d like to…

Michelangelo's Pietà, St Peter's Basilica (1498–99)
It's the birthday of Michelangelo, born in the village of Caprese, Italy March 6, 1475. His first major work of art was the Pietà, a marble statue of the Madonna holding the dead Christ in her arms. The figures were perfectly balanced and carved from a single block of marble.
The story was that, after the statue had been put on display, Michelangelo went to see it and overheard a crowd of people praising its beauty. Someone asked who had made it and another replied that it was il Gobbo, from Milan. That night Michelangelo locked himself in with the statue and carved an inscription on the Madonna's robe that reads "Michelangelo Buonarroti the Florentine made this."
It was the only work he ever signed.
