In your convict childcare au I could see c!Techno trying to recount some story after Micheal insisted he tell one. And like alot of kids (especially w diffrent adaptations of stories like fairy tales) every second Micheal interrupts c!Techno to tell him he's telling it wrong, that it didn't happen like that. instead of c!Techno telling the story it becomes Micheal making gestures to c!Techno trying to tell/mime the story as Dream told it.

So,,,, the unfortunately angst here is that Michael is actually very used to hearing different variations on the same stories. c!Dream's prison sentence gave him some major struggles with memories, so each time he'd tell a story to Michael it'd be different from the last time. The key beats often stayed the same, but the details changed. So Michael's more than used to that for most stories.

However!!! The Book that Dream wrote for Michael, the only one of Dream's books to survive after everything & the one that features c!Techno. That book is sacred.

Because Dream was worried about c!Sam getting upset if he found out about the book, there were rules on when the book could come out (only after Sam had visited for the night, only once they were sure he was gone, not every night, always have to put it away before bed). Everything in the book was written very carefully by Dream, so he remembers it really well compared to his other stories. So every time he'd read it for Michael, he'd read it very similarly. It's practically a tradition for him. A very important tradition that Michael treasures.

The first time Techno tries to read it to him, Michael is stopping him every other second and being very grouchy because that was not the right word and you have to point at the picture here. After 4 pages, Michael takes his book and leaves because he's so huffy about the story being read wrong (Dream is still very sick and Michael misses him so much and he just wants his caretaker to wake up and tell him everything is okay and read him the story correctly because none of these stupid adults know how to do it right).

Nobody else is allowed near the book until Dream is finally well enough to read it to him, and around the third reading, Techno is allowed in the room to learn how to read it correctly. It takes several viewings, but he finally learns how to do it, and the first time he's allowed to attempt reading it to Michael again is a big moment in their relationship (he still needs some minor corrections, but it's taken in stride this time).
