i find dom and kenna so fascinating because she is literally all he cares about. helping her, protecting her, serving her--he will live and die for kenna rys. she is his constant, his purpose, his true north. but you very quickly realize that he is not hers. and on some level, that makes sense, doesn't it? even from the beginning, isn't that what gabriel tries to tell her--that she has bigger things to worry about than one person, even her closest friend. and kenna doesn't really want to believe it, at first. but then her whole world crashes down and she has to be a warrior and a queen, she has to worry about the fate of hundreds of people, she has to avenge her family. and dom? he's her childhood best friend, and she loves him, and he is one of those people she needs to avenge and worry about--but in many ways, he's just one of those people. hes her friend (or lover) of course, so theres more at stake in her feelings regarding him as a person, but intrinsically, her true north, her purpose, cannot be him because that would jeopardize the millions of others she has to worry about. but for dom, he doesnt have the fate of the world/five kingdoms on his shoulders. but he wants to be useful, and he wants to be useful to kenna. and its almost sad because hes almost obsessed with her, and she sees him as another (very close) friend, but her obsession and her mission lies in the greater world.

but i think thats the interesting part about dom in the spirit world--he wants to protect her, but thats not what she needs. she is a protector, an avenger. she doesnt need him to serve her--from the very beginning, all shes wanted from him is that precious moment of companionship the series began with, the two of them sparring on the grass. and so the ending? they spar together again, and theyre happy and dom at last has a purpose outside of serving her. he wants to help people, thats what hes always done, when he saved the hawk, and rose, and kenna--so it seems only fitting that he go become the ambassador he does.
