Game of Thrones one year on- why it went wrong- Characters part 2
The key 5 and character perception
In GRRM original outline he named 5 key characters Tyrion, Daenerys, Bran, Arya and Jon all of whom for different reasons were looked down upon by Westerosi society, with one of the key elements of the story being how these perceptions aren't necessarily correct and how these characters overcome the discrimination that they face.
But in the show they all end up fulfilling these perceptions which in turn leads to an unsatisfying conclusion for these characters.
Tyrion is looked down for being a dwarf, he is the demon monkey, kingslayer and kinslayer, he is seen to be treacherous and unworthy of high ranking positions such as Lord of Casterly Rock and is never given the praise he deserves.
And by the end of the show he is treacherous he turns on Dany and betrays Varys, he is undeserving of being Hand of the King after his terrible job he did as Dany’s hand.
Dany was seen by many to be no more than the Mad King’s daughter and like him she too will be mad and she too will burn innocent people alive like her father.
And by the end of the show they were right she did turn mad like her father and use her dragons to burn innocent people alive.
Bran was seen as a cripple to be be useless as he could’t swing a sword or lead men into battle, he is an unfit ruler who people will struggle to respect.
And by the end of the show his powers, his journey to meet and become the Three Eyed Raven were useless he did nothing in the Battle of Winterfell, to defeat the army of the dead but simply acted as bait for the Night King. He is also an unfit ruler for the Seven Kingdoms as we never see him ruling or show any of the necessary skills needed after coming back from beyond the Wall.
Arya is looked down by Westerosi society for being an unladylike lady as she is unable to sing, dance of sew well, she either has to conform or she has no place in society.
And by the end of the show it turns out she has no place in society, she didn’t fit the typical model of being a lady so she didn’t belong, she couldn’t become a councillor or ruling Lady and instead there was no place for her in Westeros so she leaves the continent altogether.
Jon is seen as a bastard to be wanton, treacherous and untrustworthy by nature he has no place in Winterfell, higher society or the perfect Stark family so is sent to the Night’s Watch as it is the only place he can rise high in the world and get the recognition any actions may deserve.
And by the end of the show he was portrayed to be treacherous and untrustworthy when be betrayed and murdered Dany, in the end he had no place in Winterfell, society or the Stark family, he didn’t get the respect or recognition he deserved for uniting people for the long night, he instead got sent to the Night’s Watch as it is the only place he belongs.
You can see how everybody ended up fulfilling the preconceptions that Westeros had about them, I can’t imagine the story that George is writing is that the people of Westeros were right about these conceptions and to look down at these characters, which is why D&D’s ending leaves such a bitter taste in the mouth.
